Sad end to a legend of jazz, funk and African music. Soul Makossa has been imitated many times, and it's a classic.

Great catalogue of work and he moved with the times, very contemporary in the mid 80s like Herbie Hancock.

Didn't know where that refrain originally came from. What a cool song. RIP cool jazz guy.

RIP Manu. Damn.

An old buddy of mine, UK rapper MC Mell'O', impressed me by making a record with Manu Dibango in the early 90's.

Fuck, Soul Makossa was (and still is) an absolute monster of a track.

Both Herbie and Manu collaborated with Bill Laswell in that period. I vastly prefer Electric Africa, on which Herbie plays synths and Laswell  produced, to the better known Rock It.

Had never heard this before, so here's one of the tracks if anyone else is curious.

Didn't know that, will check it out

There's a whole bunch NY/African stuff with Herbie, Laswell and his DMX from around that time. The other large centre (outside of the African continent) for African productions at that time was Paris.

I think it was on CaB Radio that I first heard Manu Dibango - Big Blow and fell in love with it. Beyond "big blow" and "c'est maman", I've no idea what the lyrics are, but I guess it doesn't matter. DUMELE!
