NHS Clapping

This is the closest thing we'll get to the bit in Network where Max's daughter opens the window and everyone's shouting they're mad as hell.

A BOAT was letting its big horn off near me.

honeychile

Just been out walking in my permitted daily exercise slot, and as i was going through a posh bit someone came out on to the pavement. Fuck's sake, now i have to cross over. But as i started crossing, someone came out on the other side. So now i have to stay in the middle of the road. And just when i was thinking, ok i can go back on to the pavement now, loads of them come out. So now i can't go on to the pavement due to social distancing, so i'm forced to walk up the middle of the road, with my headphones on, with people lining both sides of the street, who all then start applauding me on my way. And then fireworks start going off. It was truly surreal, like a fucking dream.

Then i get home and see this thread. Felt like Alan Partridge with the war vet on the train.

This is going to trigger people's PTSD and then the nurses will have more work to do

Think it through guys

I CLAPPED I CLAPPED WHEN I SAW IT

Cloud

Didn't think anyone out here in the random housing estate in east bumblefuck would bother with it.  Entire street ended up clapping and cheering!  That was rather nice I thought, yeah I joined in, everyone did here.  Never seen anything like it and good to see a little bit of positivity an solidarity

Every reaction I've seen so far has been similar "ooh that was lovely"

Click onto CaB: "Bah, humbug, half of them voted Tory, just a load of rubbish virtue signalling noise for Facebook"

You lot could put a dampener on a funeral :D

greencalx

Presumably the right and proper thing for a CaBber to do at such times is to pull a moony.

I know I did.

Because a social media giant told people to clap their hands like seals to appreciate something they wanted to destroy?
What you're saying is, of the hundreds of thousands of people who clapped, none of them did it because they thought it would be a nice thing to do, and every one of them voted Conservative.

I understand approaching anything with a level of wariness, but there are undoubtedly a lot of people who did this because they wanted to show some genuine appreciation for people putting their lives on the line trying to save people, my dad - someone who generally has no idea how to express his emotions - had tears in his eyes, I see a large number of my friends posting it online and being uplifted by it, and then come here and everyone's just being snidey because, y'know, being snidey is the thing to do. This place depresses me sometimes.

well a lot of staff have had to work very long hours making sure the death count stays as low as it can and get folk back to health, you never know a fellow CaB member may very well have to rely on them sooner or later

Something quite sinister about how this reads, almost like you're wishing it on one of us.

Admit it. Admit that's what you're doing you sick fuck

Went outside and clapped, but it was for Raoul Moat by mistake. Shit.

i applaud you good sir

Whatever reason they did it for, whoever's behind it, I think it's a good thing that people of all kinds joined together to think of, support and celebrate the NHS and its staff.  That can only be a good thing, surely.

They didn't do it here, we don't have the NHS or public clapping times.

Pingers

Well there are NHS workers on my (ridiculously left wing) street who were very happy about it and saw it as an act of solidarity, so it can't be that bad

+1

For the record I voted Labour and clapped because I've seen how hard the NHS staff work at the best of times, and am grateful for every moment that we still have them.  And also because it felt good.  Not everything has to be politicised!  Sure they wouldn't be so overworked if they were better supported at the government level but.. well if we must make it about that then all the more reason to applaud them imo, they carry on saving people despite over 50% of them having voted to make their jobs harder.

Not meaning to try and "force" anyone to think it was a nice gesture but yeah it's classic cab to sneer at something like this.

They were all shouting and clapping on my Mum's street, and she had a little cry. NHS NI has been particularly badly treated the last few years.

Yep, that's how I'm looking at it. In general it's pretty meaningless, and in large part it'll just serve to make the UK's equivalent to the "thoughts and prayers" crowd feel good about themselves, but it is a focused reminder that a thing is important and many people agree, maybe it'll help reframe things a little bit and I can only presume that's the goal behind it if there is one.

greencalx

We're reasonably friendly with the neighbours and it was nice to see their faces apart from anything else.

Danger Man

Lots of clapping and cheering in Nottingham.

I shouted "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" but I don't think anyone got the reference.

batwings

I had a nice long clap. Unlike my passengers who were screaming. Etc.

Actually had no idea this was happening until the whole street started to applaud. Feel a bit of a pariah now.

I'll show mine by dropping off a box of examination gloves tomorrow[nb]they could well be the exact same type as my employer keeps in the ppe cupboard[/nb]

Yeah, the NHS is great, I love it. Hence why I vote Labour.

But the issue is, people don't actually care. They juat want to be part of something, they want to feel like they are doing something good, a quick endorphin rush to feel good about themselves. Hell even me bringing this up will be batted away with "take your negativity elsewhere" etc, which says it all to me.

massive bereavement

I had no idea it was happening or that it happened. Didn't hear anything on my street, perhaps they're all dead already.

I'm a diagnosed mentalist so I'd like to think I can recognise mental illness when I see it and after just a couple of days it feels as though everybody else out there has completely lost the plot. Standing outside your house in the dark applauding in the direction of the house opposite.... I find that quite disturbing to be honest, what on Earth are they going to be doing in two/three weeks time?

I'm generally snidey because everything is fucking hilarious and stupid to be. I'm snidey about this because of the reasons stated above. It's people wanting to feel good about something.

If that helps you, fair enough clap away man. Doesn't help me at all. Just makes me laugh.

And I know for the record most people round my way clapping are tories. And tories won by a landslide last year so yeah likely that most are tories.

I hope the nhs gets the funding it direly needs and britain leads the way in a socialist utopia all over the world but wont happen.

Sebastian Cobb

Imagine somewhere, someone completed a wank around the time of the applause.

Exactly, this was inert, performative, virtue signalling.

Next time I have a wank I'll think about nurses. Come, join me in tribute.

You could well be correct about many peoples' motivations.  However, don't you think that doing this, feeling part of doing this, talking about it, all of these things, will engender a feeling of care and protectiveness, pride and ownership, in the hearts of all of these people?  Or even some of them?  And that has to be a good thing when it comes to future democratic decisions and safeguarding funding.

Probably not because in three weeks it'll be facebook telling everyone to drop a bucket of cum on their cat and people will forget about the nhs.

Captain Crunch

I'm saving my applause for when they all go on strike.  Next week.

yes they did, and in Spain and Italy before that (I expect they still do)
