Next time I have a wank I'll think about nurses. Come, join me in tribute.

Nurses in Bondage is one of the great overlooked subgenres of Japanese porn.

I suppose all the NHS nurses are tied up in (some satirical joke here)

Probably not because in three weeks it'll be facebook telling everyone to drop a bucket of cum on their cat and people will forget about the nhs.

I'm not so sure.  I also think it must be a big boost for NHS workers and by fuck, they deserve that.

Zetetic

As an NHS worker[nb]A cowardly bureaucrat though.[/nb], it faintly irritated me.

Buelligan

Yes, I know.  But you have to accept, you are also Zetetic.

You could well be correct about many peoples' motivations.  However, don't you think that doing this, feeling part of doing this, talking about it, all of these things, will engender a feeling of care and protectiveness, pride and ownership, in the hearts of all of these people?  Or even some of them?  And that has to be a good thing when it comes to future democratic decisions and safeguarding funding.
I don't know that this has to be a good thing. It might be. I don't really have opinions on it. But I think it's definitely fair to say that we are encouraged by people who don't want to change things to engage politically in ways that don't produce any change, as a way of using up energy we might otherwise focus into protest or actually political engagement, and to say "but we encouraged the clapping, of course we have your best interests in mind".

It's the same thing as weak satire being ultimately harmful. There's a nation full of people saying "covfefe!" and laughing up their sleeves and that's it for their political engagement. Job done.

And some of my braver colleagues appreciated it, I have to concede.

You could be correct.  However, given that the clapping was organised, so it was going to happen, do you think it would've been better or worse if left-leaning people refused to take part?

Dewt

I don't know TBH. It would probably be fine. I would join in as I wouldn't want to actively show disrespect, and me staying out of it wouldn't make its potential negative effects go away.

I don't really have an opinion on it either, I thought they were just replicating the clapping people are doing in other countries. it doesn't take much energy, unless you've spent all your day wanking. what protests can you do during lockdown?

Zetetic

Lurking in my own filth.

Buelligan

You disgust me.

Quite.  I think it's a bit like Corbyn going to the cenotaph.  He knows it's been hijacked as a PR exercise, at least in part, by horrible cunts.  That's not important.  He goes to show solidarity with the people who suffered.  He goes to show that the Labour Party offers its solidarity to those victims.  That's important.

My point was not that the time spent doing this was directly taken up by clapping for a bit.

It's about engagement being sanitised. I believe very strongly that we are herded into expressing ourselves politically in ways that have no effect. I think people have a capacity for engagement and this stuff occupies it, as well as becoming the main story that is reported over less pretty but more meaningful things.

well that's been going on for a while now.

Dewt

Well, yes. I'm not really into making a case about this. I honestly don't care that much about this in particular, I'm just picking up on "it has to be a good thing" which I disagree with.

Old Nehamkin

Don't know why anyone would want to clap for Covid. It's more deserving of a nationwide booing if you ask me!

Billy

Glad I read this thread as the sound was off on my phone and I was wondering why every cunt was posting blurry dark Instagram videos panning around generic-looking blocks of flats.

C_Larence

Just seen a video of Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak clapping outside number 10. Cunts.

Buelligan

Rishi's thinking how long he'll have to wait to take Johnson's job.  Johnson's thinking how can he get rid and why Cummings buggered up the Javid thing and let the fucker in.  Cummings thinking soon, my pretty, sooooon.

Frankly, fuck the motivation of anyone who was doing this out of anything other than genuine appreciation. It doesn't matter. What does matter is that frontline NHS workers particularly are having a really, thoroughly shit time at the minute, trying to cope with a disease that does pretty unpleasant things to its victims, in addition to much of their usual workload. And they finish their shifts knowing there's a decent chance they'll have picked up the virus causing it and be taking it home to their families. So if they are cheered by the clapping, that's the only thing that matters.

And in my limited exposure to frontline NHS workers (having a partner who works in A&E and living somewhere that has seven other NHS employees occupying the three houses either side of us), they very much appreciated the intention and sentiment.

I just hope that the most enthusiastic of clappers goes on to support NHS workers in ways that don't elevate Boris Johnson.

BlodwynPig

The guy in Italy who was on Tysky tonight said that Italy experienced a similar social outpouring 3 weeks ago (the singing), which was Phase 2

Phase 3 was boredom

They are in Phase 4 - depression and self loathing

Can't wait for Phase 4

It's not enough that we're dealing with CORONAVIRUS, now we've got to deal with FUCKING ANTS as well.
