Some interesting, if not terribly helpfully presented, discussion of death figures in bits of Italy:
https://www.corriere.it/politica/20_marzo_26/the-real-death-toll-for-covid-19-is-at-least-4-times-the-official-numbers-b5af0edc-6eeb-11ea-925b-a0c3cdbe1130.shtml

tl;dr - a substantial shortfall between usual expected deaths + COVID-19-attributed deaths compared with total number of observed deaths.

Attribution of cause of death? Identification of presence of COVID-19? Other deaths resulting from healthcare system pressure?

Sebastian Cobb

I heard somewhere that there was some skulduggery going on where relatives need to consent to the deceased being added to the figures.

If that's regarding the UK, I'm fairly sure that's a misunderstanding about fiddling with timings and stuff to allow people to be notified.

I don't think that PHE or the ONS are likely to be doing anything to downplay the deaths with that end in mind.

Oh I, I just died in the community tonight
It must have been something you spread

I've been looking at this

https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus

Why are the Spain figures given on here so different to the ones the Guardian are reporting?

(updates near the bottom)

I've noticed on that website that the Spanish death figures get updated about three times a day - once in the morning, once in the afternoon and once in the evening.

I think the 24-hour period the Guardian measures (or that Spain announces) starts sometime in the afternoon, and finishes with the morning figures of the next day. So what you're seeing on the worldometers site at the moment is not the deaths of the last 24 hours, but just the ones recorded this morning[nb]And sadly if you check back later tonight, you'll see a much larger number of deaths recorded in Spain.[/nb], whereas the Guardian is taking those into account along with the ones which were recorded yesterday afternoon and evening.

Actually that makes sense as they add the Wales, Scotland and NI figures as they come up - although they do make that clear.
