Tales From The Loop: Amazon show based on Simon Stalenhag's ace art

Available on Amazon: "Townspeople live above "The Loop," a machine built to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe."

Based on Simon Stalenhag's fantastic artwork, which someone else linked to on here before:

(Not necessarily that piece though.)

Not seen it. Might be shit. Hope it isn't. It's live action, which seems like a bit of a waste - shurely some rotoscoped thing would be better? But I suppose it would be hard to maintain that level of detail.

I love Stalenhag's work, got The Electric State (where the above pic is from) a while back and the artwork really got into my head, stark images from a dying, possibly in parts evolving human society that will stick in my mind for the rest of my life. The accompanying story (it is narrative art) is pretty straightforward and minimal, which suits the pictures, allowing them to do the talking. I'm sure a lot of people have only seen the art online and thought up their own stories.

I haven't read Tales from the Loop or Things from the Flood yet so I might avoid this until I've read TFTL. Looks the part though.

Amazon boo, Johnathan Pryce yay

Those are my paltry thoughts and if they achieve nothing else at least it'll clear the edit bug

Had no idea this was happening.
I hope this doesn't jar too harshly against the blanks I have filled in myself.

It was a little disappointing when the RPG came out and the sense of a massive, uncanny thing that was in the art had been streamlined into 'Stranger Things but Sweden'.

I think my ideal Simon Stålenhag story would be no story and just pictures... oh...

Yep, I flicked through the book mentioned upthread while at the New York Comic Con last year, and it actually depreciated my enjoyment of the art, which is so more interesting and evocative when it hints at a larger story without explicitly saying what it is.

I think the ideal narrative film for his work would be a quite understated human story with all the weird shit happening in the background, largely unexplained. That's what I like about his art - the sense of people just trying to carry on as normal while the world itself is warped almost out of recognition.

Sin Agog

Loved some of the references in the first episode- Paddle to the Sea, Summer With Monika etc.  Should shape up into something pretty good.

surreal

Yeah, it's very understated and odd - kind of a very mellow sci-fi anthology.

Dex Sawash

Seen 3 of them now, trying not to feel bored. Wish I knew how to watch stuff properly.

Need that leggy bot to make friends with a kitty or something.
I did like it when leggy bot

Dr Syntax Head

I linked his art here years ago now. Very much want to see this

Campbell Soupe

Love his posh picture books and wasn't sure how their elliptical nature would translate to the screen.  Two and a bit episodes in and i'm undecided. It's very low key, which is a relief -  maybe a bit too slow burn for its own good. I'm intrigued, but a little bit bored tbh.  Was worried ep2 was going into ViceVersa territory, but actually turned out a bit of a downer (Even though I kept expecting Roger Furlong to drop some barbed F-bombs)

Remains to be seen how the episode narratives will come together (if indeed they will) but will definately stick with it.  Some nice shot recreations of Stalanhag's art, but without signposting too much. It's a pity the setting was changed to Ohio, but to be expected I suppose, given it's an yank production

Watched the first 2 episodes so far. Ploddy, but not in a bad way.
I've enjoyed it muchly.

She was banging on about how programmes should have warnings up, but I said you'd have to have warnings up for everyfuckingthing. Everything has an associated phobia. That man has a beard! ++WARNING++

Episode 3 was basically the plot from japanese porn (so I'm told etc).

Episode 4 was quite affecting, great performance from Jonathan Pryce.

Not started 5 yet.

Enjoying it so far though, ok it's not the fastest moving but it's well put together and as a one-off series I think it's great.

Artie Fufkin

Watched the first 5 episodes now. Episode 5 being the weakest, I thought.

Like, what was the point? Did I miss something?

And my fave episode so far. Coincidence?

Dex Sawash

Long finished, pretty much nothing good after leggybot legged it at the end of 2. Leggybot did have a few moving scenes later, I guess.

Super disappointed that the security guard guy didn't bone himself in the alt timeline.

Is it bad that I didn't realise they were different actors for a while....?

Icehaven

Loved Simon Stalenhag's art for ages so I was sort of interested to see how this turned out, although with the same apprehensions others have about having the undefined 'something' spoilt. 3 episodes in and finding it a bit meh tbh but will probably persevere just because it looks so good, might watch the rest with the sound turned off. Also the music is distractingly similar to the Truman Show. score.

Loop-y Santa from across the street, lurking at the rear corner of the house.

NoSleep

I did start watching this yonks ago but lost the impetus a few episodes in. The brief is more enticing than its execution.

Dr Syntax Head

Watched all of it on a night shift he other night. I liked it but didn't change my life. It got me through the night though

Me too. When I first saw his art work my immediate thought was that I would voraciously consume any cinematic interpretation of it, but I dunno, maybe it's one of those ideas where you're better off filling in the gaps in your head.

Definitely. At the New York Comic Con last year, I came across a stall that was selling nice big art books of his work, with an accompanying narrative that explained the significance and meaning of the various images. Killed the thing stone dead. "Oh, is that what's going on? That's a lot less interesting now."

Made me appreciate Twin Peaks: The Return, and Lynch's ability to tell a (mostly) coherent story while still imbuing it with mystery and arcane terror, even more.

I also was pretty disappointed when I found out there was a narrative for the pictures. They're so damned interesting and stand up on their own without any accompanying text.

Dex Sawash

I had forgotten about the tv show. When I searched for the Stellenhag thread to put my Santa pic up, I was looking for the original one from a few years back.

All his books are like that - I've just received his new one "The Labyrinth" which as usual he had done through Kickstarter.
