It's anonymous fiction said to be 'based' on the life of Dublin Jack, who would have been in his early 20s at the time the above passage is set. The reference to pederasty would have referred to his earlier days as a rentboy in Dublin in the 1870s, though he was later involved in two of the biggest homosexual scandals of the age - Dublin Castle in 1884 and Cleveland Street in 1889. Nobody really knows about the accuracy of anything in the book, but Saul being described as having an "Adonis-like figure" and a "priapus nearly 10 inches long" I think woukd preclude the notion it's some kind of child sex fantasy. I more posted it because Dex's reference to burnt sperm reminded me of the passage, and of course how funny and modern sounding the slang is despite being published in 1881.
