Roy Horn? Also a lot of Roman Catholic priests, top Israeli torturer Itzhak Ilan, top South Vietnamese "counter-insurgency expert" Tran Ngoc Châu, meat baron/cattle abuser Aaron Rubashkin, and several high-ups in the government of Iran. But it does seem to have spared the seriously rich, which is nice. (The first royal to die was the socialist campaigner Princess María Teresa of Bourbon-Parma, and a couple of elderly Eurotrash seem to have bit the dust, but they've managed to keep our lizard rulers safe.)

C4 Dispatches is apparently reporting that Randox Labs (Northern Ireland-based?) are a fucking nightmare. They're part of the UK Government network, so we don't have any say on whether tests collected in our country get sent there.[nb]I'd guess it's over 10% of our tests.[/nb]

(Randox test kits had to be withdrawn early on in the pandemic because of safety concerns, incidentally.)

598 deaths!

The success story continues, new records are created.

This is like Children in Need when they reveal how much money they've raised as the show goes on.

Johnson doing PMQs by videolink today

598 dead but "you love Corbyn the Antisemite" for fifteen minutes.

Fambo Number Mive

I think Johnson will struggle doing PMQs from home. I guess if the alternative is to have Raab do it in your place you're not going to miss it though.

Hopefully he has a BRAY app on his laptop.

That'd be good, like the Vic Berger airhorn

I have full confidence in Randox after seeing a leaky sample exetainer being wiped with a cloth, the same cloth used on the previous leaky exetainer

Why do rates fluctuate so much? In the South East it's rising whereas it's falling nearly everywhere else. Where I live is particularly bad, although where my parents are is worse. These are two areas that a few weeks ago were much better than surrounding ones. I don't believe that people were behaving better than they were elsewhere then, or that they are suddenly much worse now.

Schools and prisons seem to be a big factor, but they are all over the country.

When you're looking at such a low-level and with (still) fairly low prevalence, the numbers of cases involved are very small and so spread is fairly ... chaotic? You can get unlucky and 1 case becomes 10 within a week or two, or you can get lucky and 1 case becomes zero or one.

Compounded by significant variation in the effectiveness of contact tracing, probably, as well.

Tier 3 here we come!

And I can still get my haircut and spend all day shopping while the kids are at school (until their schools are closed as so many others round here are). Or at least I could if I wasn't going to work.

Spot on, heteroskedasticity bit me on the arse last week.

I remember a panic when locally cases had quadrupled - turned out to be from 2 to 8.

Many more now though.

For those of you who need a laugh and schadenfreude, check out the responses to the boss of Australia's National Airline QANTAS, talking about preparing for a world where you can't fly international without a vaccine certificate. Amazing stuff from people all around the world, losing their shit about something that will never affect them (Flying on Australia's national carrier). He's talking to the tabloid "current affairs" show, which is usually placating racists by pointing out refugees have access to whitegoods.

QuoteThis is insane vaccinating us like dogs come near me with a vaccine and I'll shove it down your throat it will be the last thing they ever try and do I'm buying a yacht
QuoteI hope that the Qantas CEO knows that his airline is going out of business...
QuoteSaw this coming. Another way people from developing countries to be discriminated against.
QuoteGoing to be a huge legal and moral fight, especially as far as kids is concerned, but also for many adults. This will be illegal in many parts of the world. And how is @Qantas going to judge effectiveness of Chinese, Russian and other vaccines? Joyce hasn't thought this through.

...and finally
QuoteGo woke go broke
Because of course, vaccines are "woke"

QuoteI'll be choosing my airline by how safety conscious it is. You can always fly Air Afghanistan instead.

We just found out my sister-in-law, who lives out in California, has been taken off to hospital as she was struggling to breath. She'd been feeling bad for about 10 days and was due to go for a test tomorrow. My wife (and their other sister) are in bits, I'm trying to be reassuring that she's a healthy 22 year old with no underlying conditions, but I doubt it helps a jolt.

Aside from her studies, she works in Home Depot, who a couple of months ago stopped insisting on customers wearing masks in the store. One of her colleagues also fell sick recently.

Bernice

Fucking hell, that's dreadful. You might feel a bit useless just reassuring but I'm sure it helps, and the odds are certainly in her favour.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

"Go woke go broke" doesn't really work because most of the original far-right whinge spincycle surrounded successful big names and corporations 'virtue signalling'.

Go woke, make an absolutely shit tonne of money through aggressive capitalist practises just with a smiley face on the advert isn't as catchy though.

I think I worry more for the younger sister - there's only 18 months between them (my wife is 13 years older) and they're almost like twins, very much their own little support network out there, given they only immigrated there a couple of years ago.

My lady is on the phone on to the youngest now, it seems the sick sister has managed to get a message out, which I'm hoping is a good sign. Just hoping their dad, who is 70 and lives with them, managed to dodge the bullet.
