Worth remembering when they talk about a public sector pay freeze, we could have saved £10bn if the government had ensured stocks of PPE were adequate in 2019:

Had the government been able to pay 2019 prices, it would have spent £2.5bn on PPE in 2020.

In reality, it had spent £12.5bn, including hundreds of millions on "unsuitable" items that could not be used.

Some had "passed its expiry date or did not meet current safety standards", the watchdog said, with "insufficient checks" meaning Public Health England...

Yes. Though much as I'd love any opportunity to stick the boot in, the parochialism and exceptionalism doesn't stop there.

Has been interesting seeing members of the socialist campaign group in Labour gradually trying to mollify their position (which is pro-lockdown until a vaccine with massive financial support for those concerned and a tax on the corporations profiting from unfair trading conditions). Zarah Sultana's post yesterday read uneasily, as though she knew any outward support for increased restrictions would be extremely unpopular.

Why didn't we make this month lockdown stricter? We've made everyone's lives moderately more miserable without a dramatic suppressing of cases, and while I understand reduction of deaths take longer to feed through, the 7 day average for deaths is still climbing, not falling. The tier system announcement seems a tacit admission of failure (as well as having some arbitrary and totally unfair distinctions)

Seems like the real plan until the vaccine program is delivering is to just doddle along in this purgatory state pleasing no-one, either those with a focus on public health or the people who literally don't give a shit who lives or dies so long as they can do what they want (until it happens to someone they know).

Still gone to work five days a week, shopped in the same shops, got the same takeaways. Going by the traffic on the road each morning that was true for a lot of people.

Yes it has been nose to tail outside my apartment at 5pm every day.

A pretty weak impression of a 'lockdown' and they could have fucked up here because it will make the population much less willing to go back into a true one if they have to.

Same here, except that my daughter has to isolate and not leave the house because like so many schools round here there is a case in her year.

In one of the worst areas at the moment and the schools seem to be the problem. Total waste of time. and next week all the shops open as usual but with Xmas bundles.

Same here. The only things I couldn't do anymore were things I wasn't doing anymore anyway, like going to the pub, cos of the infection risk.

The official figures with the 28 day restriction have risen about 10,000 in the last month (it's up 603 today to a total of 59,051) so it seems right that the number based on those death certificates that mention Covid-19 should jump 15,000.

What's the excess deaths as a whole on now for this year?

And we've just passed 60,000 dead even by the official totals. So that's about a quarter of the total dead in the second wave so far.

According to the BBC we're the first European country to pass 60K so we're the leaders in that at least.
