Really well cast though wasnt he? by far the best casting of Stings "career" playing a narcissistic psychopath.

SweetPomPom

I'm hoping they digitally de-age him for the new one

Alberon

Sadly they've got a new actor.

mothman

At least if they'd made the effort to make it look like something painted, rather than stitch together a bunch of cast photos taken under a variety of lighting conditions, then the hackneyed, unimaginative, cliched poster design might have had a touch of class.

Butchers Blind

Used to know a Dunc at school.

Shit Good Nose

Presumably trying to attract the Star Wars/Marvel fans with that poster.

Mr Trumpet

Space Victorian Oscar Isaac. Do I want him, or do I want to be him?

Small Man Big Horse

David Dastmalchian spoke about this in a recent interview and I think he might just slightly have over hyped it: https://www.avclub.com/david-dastmalchian-could-build-his-own-suicide-squad-wi-1847244605

"I get to be a part of what is [Villeneueve's] greatest achievement yet in cinema. I think it's one of the best films I've ever seen in my life, and I think that it's a piece of cinema history. And I don't think anyone has ever seen a film like this before, I don't think they will ever see a film like it after. I think that it's, visually and emotionally, just unprecedented. And it's also really fun, which is quite an achievement because it's, you know, just such a vast galaxy that he's created, and it's a blast".

Very strong Rick from The Young Ones energy there.

"Hands up who likes me."

Okay, I know nothing about Dune at all - never seen the film despite loving Lynch and don't know the plot of the book (except that sand is involved). The trailer there could have definitely zoned in on a simpler story and held my hand a bit, but by fuck that looks good. I wonder if people starved for spectacle might turn this into a surprise hit? (That's mad isn't it - people have all the spectacle they want, and they never want it to be even slightly different).

Anyway - I thought the design of everything looked great. They're obviously making a big deal of TC's weediness there, so of course he'll be transformed. That first shot of his silhouette looking tiny gives them loads of space to easily make him loom larger as things go on. And I smiled at the 'humour' moments. Didn't seem anything like as try hard as the marvels of the world.

Yeah, well up for dropping a few quid and getting my hair blown back by this in IMAX.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, or dissing his critical faculties, but that does remind me an awful lot of Richard E. Grant getting all teary on Twitter after seeing The Rise Of Skywalker.

No sequel confirmed?

The fan bleating about the tiny but of character humour in the trailer really just emphasises that a humourless dirge the original books were. Honestly, someone other than Frank Herbert turning Frank Herbert's ideals and worldbuilding into an actual enjoyable story is the best result imaginable.

Mr Trumpet

Villeneuve is a solid filmmaker and the cast is really great. Josh Brolin even made his bits in Men In Black 3 worth watching. I think it'll be a corker.

I didn't really like any of the Dune films/shows, didn't like the book much either.
Pretty excited about this new film and will do whatever to see it so I can participate in the 20 pages of thread from the film's opening days.

For sure going to love this new wan king of the desert, Timothee Chalamet.

Bad Ambassador

"We think that, rather than trying to cram the whole story into one film, you should do it as two."
"That's great! We'll have so much more space to cover the plot and themes without rushing it, and you get two sets of box office results out of it!"
"True, but we'll see how the first film does with audiences before greenlighting the second."
...
"You know Lord of the Rings?"
"Yes, of course. It did very well for the studio."
"You know how they commissioned all three films at once, to ensure the complete story would be made? How they actually showed trust the material and the filmmakers?"
"This film is very expensive, though..."
"How much did you lose on the recut of Justice League?"
"That's confidential."
"You know there was a previous version of Lord of the Rings, in 1978."
"That's before my time."
"They only did the first half of the book, though. They assumed that people would know it was only half the story, and that audience response would dictate whether there was a second film."
"Was there?"
"OF COURSE THERE FUCKING WASN'T!"
"No need to shout, Denis."
"If people think they're getting a complete movie, don't you think they'll be confused and pissed off when it just stops halfway through? Don't you think that'll translate into bad word of mouth and low box office? If there was a second film in the pipeline, that would mollify people - you could even have a little trailer for it in the end credits, like they did with Back to the Future Part II and this studio did with The Matrix Reloaded. Instead you're just hoping that people will want more, and then maybe you'll get around to making it with a gap of at least three, maybe four years until it comes out, with a hope that there's still interest then, rather than a gap of at most a year you'd have with a two-part film."
"What's Back to the Future?"
"How did you get this job anyway?"
"I was a partner in the corporate law office."
"So you're a lawyer?"
"Right."
"With no knowledge of filmmaking?"
"I wouldn't say no knowledge. I've seen at least 30 films."
"I've eaten 30 cakes, but I know I'm not Mr Kipling."
"Who's he?"
"Get out of my car."

This seems contradictory. Are you talking about people not having been to the cinema during the pandemic, or that the standard of spectacle, even in the years before, has been lacklustre? There have been a number of would be blockbusters released in the past year, but most of them seem to have landed with a thud. I would certainly be surprised if this managed to strike gold when even surefire hitmakers Marvel and Christopher Nolan have failed.

beanheadmcginty

Always disappointed when Gurney Halleck doesn't look like that unbelievably creepy nonce version from the old 90s PC CD-ROM game.

Cinema first or try it out on the stream?

SteveDave

I'm going to watch this on my phone in 5 minute increments to own Denis

I'm going to read the metabarons and watch the holy mountain in protest :(
Every Villeneuve I've seen has left me pretty cold.

I do think that's been a weakness in quite a few blockbusters made from cultish properties in recent years like Ghost in the Shell, assuming the audience already know whats happening well enough that a series of quite random clips and hints will be enough to draw them in.

I was wondering if people might be more hungry for that Massive Cinema Spectacle experience after being stuck at home for a couple of years (I am!) - and thinking this might be well-timed in that case with things reopening. Then, on second thoughts, I remembered what kinds of blockbusters people found impressive before all this, and how cinemas were struggling already and immediately lost hope.

I do think the Nolan comparison doesn't quite work - that film, which i paid a lot of money to see and now can't recall the name of, always seemed like a pain in the arse. The trailers were confusing, the reviews were mixed and the word of mouth was bad (mainly because no one could hear the words coming out of the actors' mouths). It sounded like a checklist of all the traits people have had chance to get tired of in a Nolan. I didn't hate it, but it was as anti-blockbuster as a blockbuster can get in some senses. If had even had the cack-handed sentimentality of an Interstellar then I'm sure it would have done much better.

Main thing I noticed from the trailer is that, bar the bit about dreaming about a girl, there was none of the mysticism/druggy stuff from the books. Be interesting to see if any makes it into the film - I think it's probably the hardest thing to get right in film form, and you can make a decent film without it.
