Saw Lynch's one on at the Odeon last night. Seen it a lot over the years but never on the big screen before. Still looks gorgeous but some of the edits are pretty clunky both visually and sonically. The matte lines are really fucking bad too.
Also, I don't remember noticing before but he does this in stereo for the duration of the guild navigator screen:

Aye, but it'll be going up against Bond (for those who want cinematic spills 'n' thrills) and the new Halloween (for those who want some genre schlock) in the US, so it's not home clear yet. I can understand wanting to avoid going head to head with Shang-Chi, but it's really unfortunate placement.

Booked two tickets for me and Mrs Nose next Thursday, morning showing.  I don't think I actually needed to book tickets, but next Thursday morning is literally the only chance we've got to see it.

I'm looking forward to it.  I don't think Mrs Nose really cares either way (she's aware of it, but hasn't read any of the books or seen any of the screen adaptations - I think she's only coming as she really liked both Arrival and Prisoners).

His early career is the thing most fans of his cite - his brother John died in 2008, and they'd made most of their movies together up to that point, so I think he probably just decided to knock his own things on the head and work for the mockbuster crowd.

I'm not saying his old movies are any good, mind - most of them are dreadful. But they're a bit better / more original than his recent filmography would have you believe.

At least once! It's done really well outside the US but it's still far from making double its money back, which is the bare minimum for films. I'm in the US, so I'll watch it in the cinema then rewatch (or just leave on in the background) on HBO Max, to try to inflate the numbers a bit.

I bailed quite early on in the mockbuster genre (Atlantic Rim was the last one I think, which - for the uninitiated - is an eternity ago in mockbuster terms) when I realised how quick they were churning them out and in large quantities as well.

Tried out the first half-hour before convincing myself to quit and (probably) wait the 6 weeks 'til it gets to cinemas here. Loved what I saw so far, great design work, Baron Harkonnen looks as nasty as he should, Jessica, the fremen, just what I imagined from the book. I don't know whether it's just me having read the book, but everything so far has been nice and clear without the need for "in the year 10 000, blah blah blah..." non-diegetic narration. There's little bits of exposition here and there, made quite natural.

It was alright though, the story kept me interested. Will watch the next one if they let him do it.
Lots of pomp and ceremony to give the nerds a stiffy, but I suppose how else are you gonna lend this stuff gravitas? It's either that or you shove in a wise cracking sidekick and go full star wars.
It feels very "young adult", that's the demographic this is mainly aimed at, I think.

Those dragonfly spaceships seem like they would be really inefficient and the wear and tear on the wings, phew! I'm usually happy to suspend my disbelief, but they were showing how heavy and mechanical the wings were when they were starting up. That'd just be a none starter, surely.
They should have had the wings hang a bit floppy so you're thinking "aaaah, right, they're very light and made out of something very strong" something like that.

You're just watching this and dreaming about what might have been, a garish Jodorowsky Dune full of splendour and strangeness and wonder :(
Can't help feeling like we got the muted, drab, mundane dune we deserved.
It actually worked well in terms of world building, hopefully the next part will be a lot more fun.

Those Apocalypse Now references were a bit on the nose, did anyone else think? Why do that?

It has its fans.  I'm not one of them (I think it's dreadful), but having said that the Arrow release is a good package - I'd probs get it myself if I could afford it.  The only thing it doesn't include is the longer TV/airline/whatever cut (not that that's particularly noteworthy).

I've ordered the UHD. I have neither a UHD player or a 4K TV.

Around 50% of little Nose's class have tested positive for covid since yesterday and are all isolating at home for ten days, so I'm fully expecting to not be able to go on Thursday now (she tested negative tonight, but has sniffles and another day for it to develop).

Question for those that have actually seen this now - those bits of humour in the trailer (that made most of us raise our eyebrows a bit), is there much of that in the film, or is it pretty much only what's in the trailer?  Or are they even in the film?

I'm one of those that wants a miserable very serious and po-faced non-campy Dune.

I haven't seen the trailer but it's as humourless and as cold and as sterile as you could ever possibly wish for!

Even if that's representative of much of the film, it's hardly campy. The fact that a bit of character-building dialogue with a hint of levity was dismissed as "Marvel-style quipping" by the fans (on Facebook, not talking about here) is a testament to how much of a dour, self-important grind the books are.

Having seen it, I can assure you that the film is so otherwise bereft of humour that one suspects those "quips" were included solely so they could put them in the trailer.
I found the whole thing a bit of a slog in places to be honest. Far prefer the 90s CD ROM game.
