57% of Republican voters think that 177,000 coronavirus deaths is ACCEPTABLE

10% of Democrats.

In Indiana, camping out on state land as part of a protest is now a felony.

(thanks the The Damage Report for this enlightenment).

The ones that have the flex duct to port the warm air from the condensor outside really are pretty nice.
Any other type won't work very well.  The heat has to go somewhere.

MojoJojo

Really if you have a portable one you want one with an intake and an output hose - the ones with only the output hose are sucking warm air into the room so their efficiency sucks. I've not actually seen two hose versions for sale in the UK.

But if you're in the US, window fitted ones are efficient and put all the noisy bits outside.

Sorry, Technology Connections did a video on portable air conditioners and I've been trying to convince work to buy me one.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Probably going to pass the 200K threshold today in the US.

The bad news doesn't stop there, in the next few weeks the deaths per million, Trump's favoured metric, is about to pass the UK. Our brief stint as a Covid superpower snuffed out like the fag end of the British Empire.

The Culture Bunker

I wonder in America the numbers of people who copped for a severe dose of it, survived, but are going to have lasting serious health issues due to not being able to afford proper health care.

If the figure of about 30% of COVID patients continuing to suffer symptoms months after infection are correct, then let's be conservative and say 10% of those are rather serious (reduced lung capacity, cognitive impairment) that's 6.7 million cases * 0.3 * 0.1 = 200k people requiring care and taken out of the workforce. At the moment.

I reckon that if it goes like this, the calls for universal health care will get very loud indeed

Shoulders?-Stomach!

If only. An absurd % of those people currently uninsured with no means to access healthcare decry all attempts to introduce universal coverage as socialism due to having been inculcated with hyper-partisan political propaganda for so long.

Trump has claimed he never underplayed the severity of the pandemic a couple of days after interviews were published where he claimed he underplayed the severity of the pandemic.

He's gone on to say that 195,000 dead is actually pretty good going and without his leadership it would be in the millions. He's also repeated the claim the virus will go away on its own, with or without a vaccine, due to 'Herd Mentality'.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

There should be an 'Overton Window' phrase for how the Right manage expectations down and down, lower and lower, until you're thankful the country isn't surrounded by rising pools of lava and your legs are still attached - ("and anyway it would be even worse with the Left in charge")

QuoteThe US Post Office (USPS) had planned to send 650 million reusable cotton face masks to Americans - roughly five per household - back in April, according to documents obtained by the Washington Post though a Freedom of Information Act request.

But the plan was axed by White House officials who felt it would create a panic among Americans, an unnamed White House official told the Post.

"There was concern from some in the White House Domestic Policy Council and the office of the vice president that households receiving masks might create concern or panic," the official said.

It would have made a big difference, especially since the poorest Americans might not be able to afford masks.

Bar in West Melbourne, Florida bans people from wearing masks: https://www.fox35orlando.com/video/851483?fbclid=IwAR1N3U94XXiBSzu05O9db3CMFAqt6k6HGv-dwQc1ExxTMmXh3fzQSR4sDrc

I imagine a load of people from outside West Melbourne will come to his bar to "support" his policy and spread Coronavirus further.

Dog Botherer

big spikes here now. nurses saying things have never been this bad here before. friend couldn't get her grandmother into a hospital because "covid is running rampant through it".

FUCKDOWN INCOMING

she got her granny in elsewhere, she's grand.

FOR NOO

Alberon

At this rate the US will be doing well if there aren't quarter of a million dead by election day.

Dog Botherer

if we get through winter without hitting half a mil we'll be doing incredible.

Anyone else reading The Day of the Dead or The Screwfly Solution?

From Florida, which has just allowed resturants and bars to open at 100% capacity. Deaths are still very high.

QuotePINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – The COVID-19 community testing site at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg is set to close Friday in response to preparations for the Grand Prix.

Pinellas County and partner agencies are working to shift the community testing operations to a new location, which will be announced once logistics are finalized.

The state-run antibody testing at the Mahaffey will also end with the site closure on Friday and will not be available at the new location.

Maybe keep the testing centre open with the antibody testing and postpone the Grand Prix? Especially as large events aren't safe at the moment.

Shoulders?-Stomach!

Still 100+ deaths from covid per day in Florida.

Yeah reopen restaurants full, pack them in, wipe them off the map

Mister Six

Republicans more likely to vote in person, so yeah - a nice big murderwave through the retirement communities out there would be great. Total boomer gravedown. Abject geriatric ventastrophe.

I meant the Living Dead, is there a book called Day of the Dead?

Screwfly Solution is great - similar theme, but instead of zombies, its MEN wiping out females across the planet, told from the point of view of a scientist tasked with eradicating the screwfly in pretty much the same way.

Yeah, humongous fan of James Tiptree Jr/Alice Sheldon here.  Always grimly amused by the fact that so many of her readers saw her as a bastion of composed masculinity before she came out as a woman and they realised it was all bitterly ironic.

QuoteMississippians will not be required to wear masks as they enter polling places on Election Day—but poll workers may ask masked voters to momentarily remove their masks to verify their identities. The mask rules are part of a set of COVID-19 "Polling Place Safety" rules that Mississippi Secretary of State Michael Watson's office formalized this week.

"A voter, who is not wearing personal protective equipment, must not be barred entry into the polling place due to his/her failure to wear personal protective equipment," the Oct. 5 polling place safety rules read.

Watson, a Republican, first previewed the updated rules during a press conference on Oct. 2.

"No one can be forced to wear a mask to vote. That is unconstitutional," Watson claimed, vowing to ensure polling places would be "clean, safe environments."..

Obviously because the mortality rate is so low and its a relatively mild virus, people are alright whinging and going on protests and being a thick spreading cunt. But I wonder if this was a virus with a mortality rate like Ebola or Marburg, that killed a lot more people in the under 65 category, would these cunts still think being sensible is unconstitutional?

There probably would be still some people out and about wouldn't there?

I certainly remember the clause in the constitution about not having to wear a mask to vote. Clear as day.

Why is the GOP bothering to try and depress turnout in a shithole like Mississippi? They'd vote for a fencepost with "Republican" written on it.

population is almost 40% african american. trump is not popular in that demographic, even by republican standards.

Mississippi seems like the sort of place where people are so totally repressed that the fear from GOP would be that the slightest hint of hope would lead to a full on revolution.

It's probably the easiest place to test their luck bringing in new horrific shit before adopting it in other states too.
