we haven't had the holiday season spike yet, probably won't start seeing that for another week or so. reinfection is a thing too, though apparently it's somehow still not clear how much of a thing.

i think you might be (understandably) basing this off your own experiences with people taking precautions and stuff. here we've been swamped with fucking idiots coming in from Kentucky to stuff their faces in restaurants because theirs have been shut down and they can't take a fucking hint. we're almost a year into this and there is a massive chunk of the population who still haven't entered reality.

If we select a state where a possibly world-competing number of people per capita 'had it already', New Jersey provides enough evidence to suggest that despite previous infections (and who knows, maybe there is some increased resistance) you can get it again and/or there is enough fresh pickings for the virus.

Seem to remember reading that they're increasingly thinking getting it again is extremely unusual. But obviously the problem is that absolutely no-one else has any kind of immunity so it has loads of immunologically naive people to get at. 300,000 cases still leaves 8 million people in that state alone who haven't had it!
