American authorities suspect they have their own more infectious variant.

The US may have its own version of a more transmissible coronavirus and that might be helping fuel the already aggressive spread of the virus, the White House coronavirus task force said in its latest report to states this week.

Reports sent by the task force to states dated January 3 warned of the possibility of a "USA variant" of Covid-19.

"This fall/winter surge has been at nearly twice the rate of rise of cases as the spring and summer surges. This acceleration suggests there may be a USA variant that has evolved here, in addition to the UK variant that is already spreading in our communities and may be 50% more transmissible," reports obtained by CNN said, calling for "aggressive mitigation ... to match a much more aggressive virus."

When healthcare workers at Olympia Medical Center reported for work on New Year’s Eve, they were prepared for another grueling day of patient care amid L.A.’s worsening COVID-19 surge. What they weren’t prepared for was the laminated paper taped to the front door.

“Olympia Medical Center has elected to voluntarily suspend all patient care services, including the emergency department and all emergency medical services, as of 11:59 p.m. on March 31, 2021,” the notice said.

Employees were outraged, blindsided and concerned, with one medical staff officer calling it a “terrible public health mistake” to close an L.A. hospital in the midst of the pandemic.

“How can we be having an acute-care hospital shut down by March 31 when we need hospital beds, when they’re putting up field hospitals and asking Navy ships to come back?” said the officer, Dr. Don Schiller. Any patients who remain at Olympia on April 1, he noted, will have to be transferred to another hospital because all clinical activity will stop.


Yet few answers were immediately available, either for the 450 healthcare workers who will lose their jobs at the 204-bed hospital in Mid-Wilshire, or for the community that relies on it...

Even if hospital admissions in LA are lower by the end of March, losing 204 beds is going to be a major issue.

I have no doubt the global rollout will be a proper fuckdown, but even the sputtering US effort has got 6.7m needles into arms already (including 700k into the wrinklies at care homes, the demographic who made up 1/3 of the total US deaths). That’s a big chunk of very vulnerable people who are (to some extent) protected now. Cases will continue to increase 1-2m+ per week because of the bizarre political setup of the US, but if the people at highest risk of dying are protected, I’d expect mortality rates to drop.

There’s so much economic and political pressure to vaccinate every worker drone valued citizen that even the shittiest and most uncoordinated efforts (like the patchwork US healthcare system) will do at least half a job.

This is, of course, based on absolutely fuck all outside of my reading of the numbers and vague tea-leaf reading hoodoo.

The NY Times is reporting 4400 in the ground yesterday. Back of the envelope maths, that means the lethality rate is somewhere around 2% (down from over 3% at the beginning of the pandemic) so medical staff are better at treating it, and that’s with (or maybe because of?) the huge increase of people in hospital beds.

I think that’s good news, though obviously the constant surging of cases (and new cases, at that) is still terrifying.
