Unexpected hip hop samples

Like when you recognise some relatively obscure indie/punk/rock song that's been sampled, going wow?

Danny Brown sampling Pulsallama

Azealia Banks sampling Enon

Any other examples? I mean I'm not the biggest hip hop head, maybe it's more common than I think, it just surprised me to think of Azealia Banks listening to a rock band featuring ex members of Brainiac and The Van Pelt.

Paul White (the producer of this and a lot of Brown's other material) has incredible sampling chops. If you've not heard his older solo albums "Paul White & the Purple Brain" or "The Strange Dreams of Paul White" then I implore you (and everyone else in the world) to do so. It's some of the best, most psychedelic instrumental hip hop I've ever heard.

I always found it adorable that Diplo sampled The Seeds on his remix of Spank Rock's "Put That Pussy On Me".

Brundle-Fly

Ian Dury and The Blockheads' What A Waste on Can I Kick It? by A Tribe Called Quest. I always loved the idea of this East Coast hip hop act would be au fait with this classic new wave single but somebody on Oscillations pointed out that this sample was added by a British producer for the Boilerhouse remix.

I find the entire world of sampling endlessly fascinating and I don't know why. The idea of building music almost literally out of other music is so fascinating. It gets so deep into the fundamental guts of what composition is. The universe experiencing itself.

It's such an integral part of the song to me too, I'm always disappointed when it doesn't appear.

Sin Agog

Cloud Rap had a ton of neat samples.  Really dug hearing Cluster's Rosa on the last track of L.W.H. and Main Attrakionz's Tape Hiss Hooligan.

I was quite surprised to hear a sample of Delia Derbyshire's 'Pot au feu' in When it rains by Danny Brown

That'll be the aforementioned Paul White again!

I always dug how Clams Casino used the sample from Imogen Heap's Just For Now in his tune I'm God, not obscure as such but I would say definitely unexpected and it's crazy how well it works.

Nothing's unexpected from Dilla, but the 10cc - Worst Band In The World sample on Workinonit is a favourite.

I've always loved this, didn't know it was an Imogen Heap sample. Lil B had it on his album too, as I remember.

There's a nice wee book you can get about Paul's Boutique that goes into this in some depth, plus the album itself obviously.

Most obscure samples I ever noticed were in WWF wrestler Scotty 2 Hotty's entrance music, which has (amongst others) clips from the original Godzilla and the weird French Peter Cushing film Tender Dracula.

His album with Open Mic Eagle; Hella Personal Film Festival, is wonderful as well...specially the first song Kicking the Endorphin Addiction

Burial using the sound of bullet casings hitting the floor from Metal Gear Solid

Workinonit is such an interesting example because it's such a better record than The Worst Band in the World, and yet the musical ideas are mostly already there on the 10cc track- it's like 10cc didn't know what they had.
I know some people like Bob James and David Axelrod have become a bit famous through being sampled, but have you ever had the feeling that there are  musicians whose work somehow feels more obscure, more forgotten, more ephemeral by being used as source material for hip hop producers?. My example would be Jeremy Storch, whose 'I Feel a new Shadow' is used to open DJ 'Shadow's "Entroducing"-though the piano intro is instantly recognisable, the tone of the original song-angsty, uncool, almost Outsider Art-like in its uncomfortable intensity has absolutely fuck all to do with the slinky world of trip hop, and somehow this only makes the morose lyrics even sadder!

Dusty Substance

I had a reverse unexpected sample discovery recently when going through some of Neil Young's albums and hearing the intro to There's A World which I only know as the intro to Nelly's Hot In Herre.

George White

Was in a Gamestop, and I hear this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQakz9-kvfI
And I suddenly shout, "That's the theme from the Visitor!"

Edan samples "Ogden Nut Gone Flake" and "Candy And A Currant Bun" in "Rock And Roll"

There are others too. The feedback at 0:08 is something I know really well but can't put my finger on.

EDIT It's the feedback from "It's All Too Much" by the Beatles. Of course it is.

Utter Shit

Probably not that surprising in context as he's from the deep south, but Bubba Sparxxx's Deliverance album is packed full of Timbaland beats which sample country songs. This is a personal favourite of mine...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6meSCrHF_8

This one from Jadakiss samples Will Smith briefly playing drums in the Muhammad Ali movie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nz3DL6EXtQ

This underrated gem from Mr. J Medeiros samples Eva Cassidy.

I try to be as niche as possible with the beats I make - moving away from the obvious areas like jazz and soul makes it twice as difficult  to get it to work in my experience, but occasionally you find something that fits unexpectedly. I used some music from that Channel 4 show called Utopia once, I've tried a couple of country songs too and sampled Mental Mickey shouting in Fools and Horses for one as well :D

Malcy

I don't listen to much 2Pac but the first time I heard Pain I wasn't expecting the track to start with a sample of Sybok & 'God' talking from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

holyzombiejesus

Dangermouse and Jemini sampled Broadcast on Take Care of Business.

https://youtu.be/cb23huEvzDE

Dean Blunt sampling The Pastels was another funny one.

Gold Chains using Stereolab's Crest as the basis of Rock the Parti was an unexpected delight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e310Daluio8

J Dilla sampled Stereolab's 'Come and Play in the Milky Night' for Busta Rhymes's 'Show Me What You Got'.
Sounds bloody great too.

I was going to post that but wasn't sure if Gold Chains was part of that whole indie/Tigerbeat6 scene and if it really counted in that case?

I bought that record but can't remember any of the other tracks. And don't know much about Gold Chains.

Yeah there's probably a lot of indie hip hop sampling stuff like that, for example YMD* sampling Drive Like Jehu - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dnE41UwzOw

(*Yah Mohs Def, their album is full of samples and references to punk rock bands from the late 90s, even Born Against get sampled)
