If you're after books, see if your local independent bookshop has a website - there's a list here, and a website you can buy through here.

I've started using www.not-amazon.co/halifax which seems alright. It's definitely not as smooth or easy as Amazon though.

Tired: supporting non-Amazon small businesses.

Wired: helping Amazon achieve monopoly power over literally the entire consumer market so that the simple act of nationalizing it will immediately achieve a nascent communist economy.

But if you order from Amazon your ordered will be picked by a robot and robots don't get the 'vid, job's a good' un.

Ha, well:

Even if you're willing to ignore all of their other bastardry I'd say it's definitely the case that ordering from them puts workers at risk, and that even if their warehouses were 100% automated the other links in the supply chain definitely aren't.

I know that this is where the government should step in, but in the absence of one that cares about the kinds of people who work in warehouses, as delivery drivers or in self-certified 'Covid Secure' contact centres everyone needs to decide whether they really *need* whatever it is that's stirred their filthy consumerist loins this morning.
