Northside - Shall We Take a Trip? (if you ignore the whispered 'L.S.D.' at the start).

Bit of rule bending, there. I'd like to nominate  " My Heart's Running Round Like A Chicken With It's Head Cut Off" by The Magnetic Fields, as long as you ignore the first verse sung at the start.

A lot of people ignoring the " UK Top 40 Within The Last 40 Years" bit, too. Bet the Doc's not best chuffed.

Walking Down Madison by Kirsty MacColl.

I've just checked There's a Guy Works Down The Chip Shop etc thinking that was one. But it wasn't.

Flicking through my mental iPod while out for my approved dailiy excercise I also remembered

Depeche Mode - I Feel You
Depeche Mode - Condemnation
Flaming Lips - Do You Realise??

Top 20. Which rather ironically disqualifies Top Twenty by The Undertones. I have a version of it on which the first words are 'top top twenty.'

Roxy Music - "In Every Dream Home A Heartache", "The Bogus Man,","For Your Pleasure" . If "Grey Lagoons" had been called "Blue Sunsets & Grey Lagoons" (as I was sure it was for some reason) it would've been four in a row!

I'm sticking to the rules now, impressing myself with my knowledge of music from the worst decade in history, I thought I'd erased the entire lot from my memory.

Monsoon - Ever So Lonely
Simple Minds - Promised You a Miracle
David Bowie - Let's Dance
PiL - This is Not a Love Song
Twisted Sister - I Am (I'm Me)
Tears for Fears - Shout

I thought "Break It Down Again" by them (or him, as it was by that point) too, esp as it just made the top 20 but on listening to it, yer man Roland does make some vague noises, and a "oh yeah!" before the lyrics proper start.

So, erm, I think "Every Breath You Take" is quite a famous example instead.

Just pick up a hymnbook, they're all like that in there.

Probably for that reason, every track on I Am the Last of All the Field That Fell by Current 93 is named after its first line.

I was going to say XTC "Generals and Majors" but it only reached no.32.

Chemical Brothers "Hey Girls Hey Boys" seemed an obvious one until I realised it was actually titled "Hey Boy Hey Girl".

Leftfield and Lydon - Open Up
Air - Kelly Watch the Stars
Supergrass - Moving

Sebastian Cobb

You can probably add 'Chant of a Poor Man' to the leftfield list if overlooking the 'this is' not considered too strict.

And Inspection (Check One).

Dewt

I hate that this is what I came up with, but

Sixpence None the Richer - Kiss Me

Nothing's Gonna Stop Me Now - Samantha Fox
Shake Your Love - Debbie Gibson
Don't Leave Me This Way - The Communards
Oh L'Amour - Erasure
I Should Have Known Better - Jim Diamond
Ebony & Ivory - Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder
Dancing with Tears in My Eyes - Ultravox
Poison - Bell Biv DeVoe

Suede - Filmstar
Slade - Everyday

The classic Suede/Slade 'title is the first word sung' combo.

Slade was more than forty years ago, mind you.

Is the second Beatleswrong "Penny Lane"? Cos I don't know if Paulma Cartney sings the word 'In' before 'Penny Lane' on the record although he does when performing live. Christ.

I was going to suggest the good version of Come Together by Primal Scream but it only got to number 26. And I'm playing by the rules here.
