I thought "Break It Down Again" by them (or him, as it was by that point) too, esp as it just made the top 20 but on listening to it, yer man Roland does make some vague noises, and a "oh yeah!" before the lyrics proper start.

You could have had "Advice For The Young At Heart".

Alas, not a top 20 hit. Plus it's not very good.

It's one of Glen Ponder's greatest hits!

Also, I'm choosing to ignore that rule as it wasn't in the OP.

Pink Floyd - One of these days

Was trying to think of one that isn't sung/spoken until over half way through the track. Be difficult to beat 3:37 minutes in.

Edit: But it wasn't a top 20 hit in the last 40 years so the search goes on.

Dark Star (Live Dead Version) - Grateful Dead; vocals start 6:04.

Eight Miles High (from "Untitled") - The Byrds; vocals in 12:11 (over halfway through).

Part 1, Acknowledgement (A Love Supreme) - John Coltrane; vocals start 6:04 (over halfway).

A Love Supreme - Carlos Santana & John McLaughlin; vocals in 5:11 (over halfway).

Or indeed you could have Young At Heart by The Bluebells.

I want to see this quiz. I don't mean to boast or anything but I've made some great suggestions here. All within the boundaries set. And also added the two worst singles ever made.

I doubt you'll be able to see it, but I can post the audio file when I'm done.

Well I didn't know that was a rule.

Looking forward to it!

I think I posted the previous ones in their respective threads.

Does it count if the first thing sung is not actual words and then immediately followed by the title? For example 'hehehe wipeout....'

If so, then I present to you Wipeout - The Fat Boys & Beach Boys. Reached no 2 in 1987.

Also legit choice Free As Bird - The Beatles. Reached No 2 in 1995.

If I were a picky cunt (and I am) I'd point out that I specified "First Thing Sung", not spoken.

This has been brought upon by years of hosting pop quizzes where people would actually complain about such things!

rue the polywhirl

Are you sure? It's kind of not spoken or sung but inbetween and therefore both.

Either way I present to you also In My Place - Coldplay. Reached no 2 in 2002.

And

Karma Police - Radiohead. Reached no 8 in 1997.

Also I Feel For You by Chaka Khan (No 1 1984) if the quiz was Songs Where The Artist Is The First Thing That's Sung.

Yeah, but that prick from The Overtones* (who looked like one of Black Lace) would have complained that it says "Chaka, Chaka, Chaka, Chaka" before it said "Khan".
THERE'S NOT EVEN A REAL PRIZE, YOU TWAT!

Sorry, I was getting a pop quiz flashback...

*Same team name every time. In fact they even stormed off in a strop when another team got there early and called themselves 'The Overtones' first.

David Bowie - Let's Dance

My irritating sock puppet account I never bothered to do in the end, Professor E.R.M Ithinkyoullfind says

QuoteErm...I think you'll find the first thing sung on 'Let's Dance' with David Bowie is "Ahhhhh, ahhhhh, ahhhh, ahhhh."

He'd have been a dominant poster on CaB in about 2005, Professor E.R.M Ithinkyoullfind. They loved an "erm..." in those days.

Weirdly I've already used this in another round and still hadn't thought of it!
