Snowpiercer: The TV Series

Puce Moment

The first episode is 'available' although not on Amazon which seems to be a week behind, much to Barry Piratebay's delight.

Sorry to be so neggy but, other than a couple of little SF design ideas that I liked, this is a complete shart.

Has anyone else seen it yet? The script is dreadful and some of the performances are the worst I have seen for quite some time. Really bad.

I'm probably not the audience for this as I really disliked the film, but I thought they might bring something to a concept that has a huge amount of potential.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

I like the film well enough. I haven't read the comics, but I'm not sure how they'll manage to stretch out the story over however many hours. Is each week going to see the heroes advance to a new carriage?

Alberon

I think I read In SFX that there's already two series of this in the can. It sounds like they use the old chestnut of the mismatched duo (she's from first class, he's from scum class) and a murder mystery to explore the society on the train.

Chairman Yang

Yeah, if there was ever a story that didn't need to be 50 hours long it's Man vs. Thatcher: Endtrain

Maybe this time the poors are to blame for their own exploitation? Actually, that'd be such a tone-deaf change that I'd applaud it.

JesusAndYourBush

I think I'll give it a miss.  The film was interesting but I've seen what life is like on the train, don't really want to go back and see more of that.  If it continued where the film ended, I'd watch that.

Puce Moment

For some reason that I cannot explain, Jennifer Connolly is in it. The main issue with that is the show becomes unbalanced by the presence of someone that has the ability to act.

Yes, they have created some kind of murder mystery to give the drama a semblence of story structure, rather than the film which relies on the Cube/Resident Evil/The Raid/Dredd going through levels structure.

Watching the film recently gave us an unintentional laugh: My housemate is into trying various meat alternatives, including insects. The shock horror reveal that the paupers were being fed ground up bugs came across as hilariously melodramatic as a result.

Mobius

I watched the film for the first time the other night and it was pretty great, but this show looks awful.

That was weird yeah. Like surely everyone figured it'd be human meat or something equally disgusting so that reveal was very lame.

Chairman Yang

Gave this a watch and it's not particularly compelling. I kept thinking to myself that the story would make so much more sense if the Detective was middle class. Maybe his family got called up in a labour lottery or something, you know?

The first episode culminates with

the violent revolt at the opening of the film

which then sort of un-happens, so the rest of the show can exist? Bonkers.

Mister Six

Shame. I really like Daveed Diggs' work in Blindspotting and clipping, so was interested for him alone. Might watch it just to see how shit it is.

I've been wrong before - you might like it!

Mister Six

Nah it looks like he's only acting in it and not involved in the writing or production, so I'll probably give it a miss.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

Speaking of Blindspotting: What is blindspotting? Is it like trainspotting, but with the visually impaired?

Mister Six

From Urban Dictionary, but this is how it's used in the film: "When a situation or an image can be interpreted in two different ways, but you can only see one of the interpretations. You have a blindspot to the second interpretation. Often used when referring to people seeing the wrong interpretation."

In the context of the story, it's when someone's race (white or black - both happen in the movie) causes others to make incorrect assumptions about their intent, personality or past.

The movie sounds heavy, but it's very, very funny too.

El Unicornio, mang

I watched the film based on quite liking Parasite but found it interminable aside from maybe the last 30 mins. But, that was mostly due to the characters/script, the concept itself I could get on board with for a TV series.

olliebean

Incidentally I notice Netflix has caught up and is no longer a week behind with new episodes of this.

I liked this overall, after it got past the initial setup (which felt like a poor clone of the film), it felt like they took it in a unique direction, the story was engaging enough and the new worldbuilding details were pretty interesting.

Sebastian Cobb

I'm a few episodes in and think it's great. I like the class stuff and I also like the idea of world-building within a really finite space, kind of like Oz in that way I guess.

Dex Sawash

Just finished this in time to see second season is coming right away. Don't want to watch any more of this but hard for me to stop anything once I've invested a few evenings. Load of old shite with about 20% not too bad 5.4/10

bgmnts

Tried to watch it but it was crap and I realised most prequels are stupid, pointleas shit anyway. Like, I already saw the film I know where this show goes, why should I care?

It's not a prequel though. The film stuff happened in the first few episodes and now other stuff's happening.

Dex Sawash

First ep of s2 was Monday.

Series 1 goes to up the arse corner. Sean Bean.

Blue Jam

Daveed Diggs is in this so I need to give it a go. Thanks for the reminder.

Blue Jam

Managed one and a half episodes of this. Interesting cast but plot and premise-wise it's ludicrous bollocks and I was getting proper "middle-class torture porn" vibes like the second series of The Handmaid's Tale. That slightly cleap and flimsy Netflix Original look is a bit too evident too. Great cast but nah, not for me. Shame.

Dex Sawash

Wish I had quit too but I usually have to finish things I start.

Sebastian Cobb

Did anyone else stick with this? I thought it got quite good post-revolution, with the new dynamic introduced by getting Bean in as Wilford.

Should be interesting to see how the series ends.

Will go full centipede for S3

Sebastian Cobb

Thought this was a good action-packed finale, minus the piano bit, which was well cringeworthy.

Dex Sawash

Too much random stuff like the Wilford Wonka carnival. Melanie's daughter is Wesley Crusher-tier character. Pretty much only like Brakeman Buzzcut whatever her name is.

Sebastian Cobb

Yeah Bess is one of the best. I quite like how Ruth changed and basically became more human over the course of series 2.

I see what you mean about Melanie's daughter, I dunno if there's much story left in her now Wilford dismissed her as a tool.

The carnival thing did seem like nonsense, it suffered from the usual 2 part finale thing where it could've easily been whittled down to a tight single-parter.
