That's the thing isn't it, it feels like a fan edit will end up being the best cut of this. I actually wouldn't lop off much apart from speeding up the first third a bit, the diabolical singing at Aquaman, and the epilogue. But that'd already knock it down to 3.5 hours

Kelvin

Already thinking about watching it again.

Oh Christ.

Custard

Hehe! You're not alone though, as I deffo want to give it another watch in the next week or so. I find the film and the circus around it fascinating

I just saw some footage of it on YouTube. Why did they bother redesigning Steppenwolf so he's wearing a leotard made of tinsel?

I remember Kermode's review of Watchmen including his opinion that Snyder cared more about the costumes the heroes were wearing than any character, plot or dialogue.

I still don't think this fella should've been the one to write these movies, but it sounds like he had a better grasp of the subject matter than the dumbass WB suits. (And he didn't write Man of Steel, so he inherited some of the edgelord shit rather than inventing it.)

The guy also wrote The Rise of Skywalker.

Fascinating stuff about having to work out the whole DC universe on the fly, before the individual films were even developed. Basically just guessing how underwater worlds would work, etc.

It's generally fascinating that after all this time and experience studio heads are still happy to stint on the writing of these things. I doubt decent writers are all that expensive considering how many people want to be one, yet it's invariably the first thing that gets forgotten about when trying to make a blockbuster.

I suspect that when you look at all the skills required to write a blockbuster at this level - most notably the ability to somehow be a charming likable dude in a room full of suits throwing around the most idiotic suggestions you've ever heard AND also someone who can willingly tolerate their own company for the years required to be halfway decent at writing - there really aren't many people who can do it.

I've done a bit of extremely low-end advertorial writing over the years and it strikes me that on one very basic level they're probably pretty similar: you're not actually doing writing as it's usually thought of, you're re-arranging the clients' ideas into the form they want while still leaving them recognisably their ideas. Often they don't even have any clear ideas ("make this shit seem cool"), so you have to figure out what it is they actually want and then deliver that. And sometimes what they want is crap (or in SW's case, largely designed to sell toys).

So you somehow have to be able to come up with a script that can be made into a movie the general public will love, and also a script that a bunch of studio executives will be happy to take credit for, and also a script that has things the director wants to film, and also a script with characters that a range of big name actors can be considered for (and may demand rewrites if they say yes).

And the job is still generally treated like an afterthought and given to various famous people's kids to do.

Finally got around to watching the BvS 'Ultimate Edition'... doesn't hugely improve the movie, but it does give more of an explanation for various characters motivations and that.

Picked this up on Blu-ray last week for €15, watched it over the last couple of nights... hmmm. It's kind of a frustrating watch, good that it expands Cyborg's story, and the Steppenwolf stuff (he also looks a lot more impressive), there are some improved action scenes and some other interesting stuff... also glad we don't get fake-lip Supes starring us in the face at the start of the movie, and glad to see the back of some of Joss Whedon's 'wry' dialogue that didn't really land... but it really is rather unwieldly and overstuffed. It feels like two films jammed together with some multiply endings stuck on. Given the circumstances under which it was released I get why it's like this, it sound's like Snyder has finished up with DC, but judging it as a single film on it's own merits it doesn't really work. Again, there's some great stuff in there but it's just too full and some of it is rather silly. Given the personal trauma Snyder went through it's good to see it released in any case.

Here's a few New Rockstars vids worth a watch, btw:

The basic problem is the film was trying to do far too much. Like every other studio trying to copy Marvel they tried to run before they could walk. This film had to introduce three of the main characters before they'd had individual movies.

It was just too much. I'm assuming that this was probably a decision taken above Snyder. At the very least they should have done Aquaman and The Flash first. They'd probably be in a much stronger position if they had.

Ant Farm Keyboard

I'm not Snyder supporter, but Chris Terrio (who was the screenwriter on BvS and JL) explained that they had to determine with the crew for Aquaman, which hadn't gone into production then, how to make characters speak underwater. There were a ton of issues that were caused by poor overall planning from the studio.

The interesting thing is that all the DC debacle had been described years before on Grantland.

The guy in charge of the studio came from the theme park division. He had never produced a single film before he got the gig, and he was all about brand extensions (hence the Fantastic Beasts or Lego spinoffs which were greenlit very fast). And, like many people from real estate who work on attractions, he assumed that several projects could be developed in parallel without any side effects.
He once announced ten DC Comics movies, while they didn't have a real hit with the stuff that had already been released.

Just watched this (not all at once) and it works well as an epic piece of storytelling. I can understand why, once it was heading for home media, Snyder tried to make it as long as possible: some could definitely be cut, especially the epilogue and better writing could have streamlined it more, but it helps to see more of the characters.

Criticism is that while it's watchable and looks nice, it very seldom is better than competent. The intro stuff with The Flash is funny, but most characters just stand around looking (what Snyder thinks is) cool, or walk away, a lot. So it successfully introduces a lot of plot and there are new characters, but doesn't build on that to give us character dilemmas, relationships, conflicts, even comic banter. It's like giant weapons lining up and going off. Even Watchmen had a worldview, this is just superhero chess.
