Not to be confused with that awful Wolfmother song The Joker and the Thief, THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF is a new documentary and maybe my favourite film of 2020 thus far. Painter Barbora Kysilkova has two of her most valuable paintings stolen from their gallery display. When the man who stole the paintings is caught the two meet and form a relationship that is fascinating to watch unfold. It touches on a lot of themes like addiction, abuse, trauma, love, friendship, artistry. It runs a gamut. It's very intimate with the camera right in these peoples faces for a story that spans years and you see some very low lows but also triumphant highs. Had me in tears at multiple points as I thought it was just beautiful.
