They will do fewer and fewer hours as the weeks go by, I would guess.

Whether they should be on there or not, the hot tub broadcasters are more reliable than him aren't they.

Anyone know what this accusation of "soft porn" is all about? All sounds rather puritanical.

This popped up on my feed on twitter yesterday and I was waiting for a CaB response...it's about what I expected (and not undeservidly so.) I stopped watching sometime around November/December as it just became a super depressing hollowed out version of the radio show. though honestly; I dont really know what was the expected outcome of this. they paid someone to do a show he blatantly and repeatedly said he didnt want to do anymore. and then right from the off Iain basically made it clear they were doing 2 years of this and then after that he was done.

I still think the main reason the twitch show didnt take as well as the radio show did was purely down to structure and the caller screening. say what you like about the radio show, but it had producers and directors involved. it had actual topics, structure, drive and steerage. they put callers on who actually challeneged both Iain and Kath which gave them something to grip and chew on and there was a push for news/politics to be covered which led to some quite entertaining fallouts. I still think one of the funniest calls they had was an arguement they ended up having with a chap who claimed to have visited stone henge but actually only went to the line where stone henge officially started. it was 40 minutes of pedantry and childishness that I really liked.

The Twitch show; right out of the gate always felt like a "We have to do this" kind of thing. the love really didnt feel there and without that producer/director/structural role in play most shows just ended up being "What can we find on youtube", "Here's a funny website" or long rants about people they dont want to talk to. All the while screening calls to only really let people on who were going to add to the love in on the air.

this entire fiasco from day 1 has been a depressing crawl to inevitability and really needs to be used as an example of "Dont just do it for the money or because you think it's easy." I feel bad for both of them and I really hope they manage to pick themselves up and find whatever it is in life they need to do.

Oh this has been a "problem" for YEARS on twitch...so called "Booby streamers" basically there are entire communities on twitch built around female streamers who either play games in almost no clothes (Bikini's, super low cut tops, hot pants or just underwear) and in recent years (the last 4-5) theres been a rise in female streamers doing that but not even playing games. just lying on the floor in next to nothing, cooking, doing exercise, sitting in hot tubs. there was one woman who for at least a couple of years just did her ironing in skimpy wonderwoman outfits.

but this isnt a new phenomenon. as long as Twitch has been able to make money these streamers have existed. theres basically two arguements for it. one that says that as long as theres no nudity/sex involved that these women should be allowed to do whatever they want to do on their streams and if people want to pay them for that then fine, and the other side which IS purely puritanical and basically argues that these types of streamers are either:

A: a gateway to sin and moral corruption for youth and the exploitable.

or

B: Stealing viewers away from hard working, good, honest, fully clothed streamers who are just trying to make a living without having to strip off for money.

Personally; I never watch them, nor do I really care what a woman does with her body as long as it's following the ToC's, but I know a LOT of streamers who wont shut up about it.

The homepage on Twitch has a stream where a woman rides an inflatable banana in a swimming pool wearing a bikini. Sure, it's wank material but Iain and Kath were acting shocked that 13 year old kids could see it, as if 13 year olds wouldn't already be wanking to much stronger stuff.

It was really whataboutery regarding their own bans. How dare you ban us but still allow this?

Thosworth

It was strange how a radio broadcaster who, even with no callers would still be able to fill two hours of airtime with entertaining broadcasting, went from that to 'Is this mic working? Is this better? If you just say 'yes' in the chat, you'll be banned...'

It's telling that if he can't make a living from Twitch, he won't do it - he was never comfortable on the platform - while the vast majority of streamers do it for the love of the medium and their viewers.

I read that him and Katherine were paid 60k each by Twitch for the year - he initially announced it as a six figure deal. He's now moving to purely producing paywalled Patreon content for his hardcore fanbase. It would surely make more sense to carry on with Twitch, taking what subscription money comes in there, while using it to funnel new listeners into the Patreon.

Yes, but that would require him to continue to do three hours per day, which he clearly doesn't want to, whereas he thinks with Patreon he could get away with a podcast and some Zoom meetings, at 6.66 per month. I think, however, that he'd need around 800 subscribers in order to match 60k a year just for one of them (1600 for them both). He isn't going to get that for a podcast which is basically just him doing a stream of consciousness monologue.

Dusty Substance

Cheers both for answering my query about his "soft porn" thing. It seems rather bitter of him to be calling out Twitch for something that they were doing before he began streaming on the platform. I can't get over that figure of 60K (each!).

Totally agree with those saying that the show was better with confrontational and argumentative callers. Almost all the best stuff came from Iain disagreeing with him and it's not something that was going to happen much on Twitch (although a mate of mine got 'banned' from calling TLNA on Twitch) and it won't happen at all on Patreon. It'll be the ultimate echo chamber.

Really hope he makes a return to radio at some point.

I think they really missed a trick with Twitch.

People working from home are crying out for a bit of entertainment during the workday and Iain's type of show would have been perfect for a morning or afternoon show. It could have created a nice community for bored office workers skiving off at home. None of these casual viewers would be bothered to tune into twitch late at night tbh, but then it never really seemed like Iain and Kath were actually looking for new viewers/listeners, it's become pure fan service

MrMrs

also who wants to watch HIM. he's incredibly unlikeable

Yup. Flicked them on for 5 minutes this morning and to nobody's surprise they were just being a pair of arrogant bullies lashing out at people. Presume the rest of the show was sunishine and lollipops but I'd turned it off by then.

Ham Bap

Watched a fair bit this morning. The show seemed to spend a lot of time talking about people blocked on Twitter/Twitch, and telling people to 'F off'.
Then the rest of the time was spent talking about what they'll be charging people on Patreon and talking to the usuals, Nigel from Maidstone etc.

1 year on Twitch I'm still not sure what the show is meant to be anymore apart from talking about how Iain needs to pay his mortgage and ranting at people.

"we don't know what it's going to be yet but we need loads of cash to do it'

You'd think the economic necessity of making a livelihood would spark some urgency to research how other podcasts attract and keep audiences, but I also feel, as noted above, the problem has now also become their attitudes towards their audience members, even those who want to be friendly and helpful. They might get some patrons but who's going to keep forking out for the podcasts when they inevitably become just 40 minutes of padding out the time.

The bottom line is that they (especially Iain) do not truly want to do this line of work.

That's perhaps what Twitch thought they were going to get as well and what they shelled out 100k+ a year on.

Instead they got 6 months of Iain sorting out technical issues, missing shows, getting himself banned from the platform a couple of times, ranting and swearing at people, banning people from chat and chatting with the usual echo chamber of repeat callers.

If this show was anything like the TalkRadio show I'd be prepared to pay the Patreon every month to watch.

Think I said earlier at the start of the thread that I thought they'd hit the ground running on Twitch, they had a month or so before it all started. Time to plan, get the technical issues sorted, put a show together, make it something.
Instead it's been tune in to watch an angry man tell us how he needs to pay the bills.

Getting booted from their 100k a year contract has been on the cards for a while too, not sure why he's surprised.

MrMrs

I CANNOT believe twitch paid them a pound, let alone thousands. that's before they became absolutely contemptible liabilities

Fuck off would anyone in their right mind pay that. It's not even a humorous amount to indicate that it's clearly a joke, and the only thing more desolate than begging for it is actually paying for it. Bet the cunt would want it on a Tuesday to save a few quid too.

bgmnts

Genuinely a bit sad.

Why does this cunt have such a huge property? World is fucked.

I assume it's a stock image and is actually an attempt to make a joke this time.

I enjoyed the odd clip of the talk radio shows on YouTube so was willing to give the twitch a go, but it was so unrelentingly miserable, boring and self pitying. I know the bloke attracts detractors, and really I can't muster the energy to actively dislike him, but fuck me, he doesn't half make life hard for himself.

Fucking hell, that's so incredibly bleak.

Completely agree with this. Thinking back to those old shows on LBC, Virgin and Absolute, they were so great. Irreverent, unpredictable and often extremely funny. Sure, he borrowed from Tommy Boyd, Nick Abbott and Chris Morris, but those shows were very enjoyable.

I've been told the Three Counties era shows were actually amongst his best work but, based on what I've heard, I don't get it - They just seem like a watered-down, family friendly version of the old shows. He and Katherine may work well together in a professional sense but I can't help but think  the two of them teaming up was the worst thing he could have done for his career.

I enjoyed the Talk Radio shows. Not sure what happened really. There's a million totally crap shows on the radio, don't see why they can't get a gig.

rude soil

Racked up a basket total of £149,999,998,500.00

Chedney Honks

Listened to him on the otherwise entertaining The Computer Game Show and it was desperate stuff. Really cringeworthy shit. I really like Iain but he needs a vehicle or a fucking job. I think he's entertaining and bright but the self pity and faux-aggrandising shit is exhausting.

EggsLikeABird

Whatever he had that made me like him is gone, I'm afraid. Poor guy has lost all perspective it seems. Its a joyless experience listening/watching him these days.

Ali G was good, though.

He doesn't live a million miles away from me, and during his last year on the radio gave some very specific house-location-based anecdotes, so it was easy to narrow down. The fireplace on his Twitch stream basically confirms which side of the semi he lives on ... and no, it doesn't look like that photo.
