Did I call Cloud a worthless piece of shit whilst I wasn't looking?

Who died and made you moderator?

Your ill feeling towards some aspects of this forum have led you to dismiss unpalatable facts as a symptom of other people's problems. I've done it myself plenty of times when I've been at fault on here.

I sympathise because it's tough to look at the world as it is. Nevertheless, this is the world right now. We can improve it by dealing with reality, not the version which makes us feel more comfortable.

Cloud

Problem with the ignore script is it doesn't sync between browsers

And it was implied by commenting that "even I have a silver lining" is "just my opinion", it therefore follows that yours is that I don't and am therefore worthless. A sentiment I feel deserves reciprocating.

Chedney Honks

I don't feel you're worthless at all and I don't mind what your opinion is, really.

My point was that it's disrespectful to dismiss uncomfortable facts with a sweeping generalisation about the place/people. I respect your right to make your own choices. I respect your right to believe what you like. I don't respect your choice of dismissing what I'm telling you because 'people here are depressed'.

Cloud

opinions != facts

Arrogance is insufficient for transforming an opinion into a fact.

Why the u-turn anyway, yesterday you were posting links showing hope in the Oxford vaccine and that it results in antibody and T cell production?!

Even taking the grauniad's love for disaster porn into account (btw a tabloid is not a scientific journal) 70% protection for 6 months is really NOT BAD.

Chedney Honks

With all due respect, I've been polite but you've had your allocation.

Add me to your list and carry on.

Cloud

Very good.  Carry on with the pessimistic circle jerk and being sneering condescending TWATS towards anyone who dares to express a vague desire for optimism.

Everything is going to be fine.

OK?

Hopefully the Oxford group vaccine will deliver.  I have seen a number of concernes voiced in the scientific press regarding antibody titres, which imply it is not as effective as one may hope.

The trial is ongoing though and they are not the only vaccine developers of course.

In an ideal world the vaccine candidate will deliver long lasting immunity from a single dose.  At the moment the  Oxford one looks like it will need a booster.

This adds significant logistical problems, in production and delivery.

Of course anything is better than the big old zero vaccines we have now.

TWATS is due a reassignment.  Can we make it Those Who Are Totally Sublime?

Brian Freeze

Can i just say thankyou to you 'tao of wub' for some interesting and enlightening posts lately, you communicate science very well to the layman like me. Much appreciated.

See, that wasn't that hard!  It's progress. May not be a perfect answer just yet, but I just wonder if we really need to shoot every positive step down with "ah but"s. This is the fastest progress we've ever seen on anything in its nature.

Read the link I posted yesterday and dissemble the imaginary mob. I know it's easier to feel that everyone is against you and you can dig in because they're all cunts...but that's not the case.

Unfortunately, there is simply more difficult news than cause for optimism right now. A denialist, individualist mindset and a desire to portray things as better than they are is what has put England in this position, both at government level and among the public. If things are to improve, we need to see things as they are.

Of course, people want to cling onto good news. I sympathise. I have been looking forward to good news since late January. Losing your temper and calling people depressive TWATS because you don't like reality is understandable, but I don't accept it and so I've challenged you politely.

This is not happening, but you're clearly struggling to control your feelings about the forum as a whole. We've all been there.

I don't have any particular feelings towards the site (or Reddit) as an entity, but there does seem to be among these places something of a "collective" that develops who are very skilled in making people who express views that don't align with theirs, very unwelcome. Then they give up and leave, and those remaining feel they've "won" and the distillation continues. It is a bit frustrating as it then gets tempting to turn to places like 4chan where at least the hostility is universal

tao of wub

Thanks Brian Freeze, that is nice to hear.  I find science very interesting, but as many hours of thermodynamics lectures proved to me, it can also send you into a tedium induced 'waking coma'.

Firmly believe that knowledge is power though, so as long as I'm not boring the pants of people.

Regarding populism and reality distortion, I saw the NYT reporting on a Fox 'News' interview where Chris Wallace actually gives Trump a bit of a hard time and fact checks him..

Seems like the USA experiment with populism is nearing its logical conclusions with chaos, mass deaths, national protests, mass unemployment, Federal snatch squads etc. and Murdoch is now thinking of cutting Trump loose.  As the PM on British shores is very much a Trump alike and has expressed his admiration for Trump's truth denying tactics, (and presumably his divisive racism), I wonder how long the UK version of this has to run?

Presumably we will have to see what sort of shit show emerges in "Empire 2.0TM" come the end of the year.

To be fair he called me a worthless piece of shit with no redeeming qualities just for saying that his silver lining is his opinion. So yeah, maybe struggling.

Nah this news is just raising our hopes so the let down is all the more depressing when it happens.

Nah, we still don't know if it actually offers any protection, and we only have a vague indication that it's barely safe enough (even then it's borderline as it has side effects)

There, hope that's downbeat enough ;)

I really hope so.

I want everyone who volunteers to turn inside out in their sleep 🤣🤣🤣

They should call it Borisetamol. Or Cumming Pills.

evilcommiedictator

What really shits me is the media reporting on vaccine progress like a horse race, and even worse, they cant communicate properly the stage of development it is at, so you get the average person going OMG a vaccine is on the way, whereas, there's another candidate at a similar stage as all these other candidates, except some bored researcher at the BBC read a press release and made it a story.
I'm intentionally not reading anything about vaccines until one starts to get manufactured

Boris set a target of September for a vaccine - he can't be seen as fluffing this. The Great White Whale Will Be Hailed a Hero of Churchillian Proportions. He needed Cummings to do this and it has worked.

But here on CaB and on the left, we must not bend.

You of all people, linking to the State Propaganda machine. Tut tut. Get to the back of the vaccine queue ;)

I won't be putting that shite in my body. I just need to whip the terror up high enough for all the other chuds to guzzle it and keep me safe.

Playing the long game.

idunnosomename

I think vaccines work by giving you a little bit of the virus to train your immune system. Therefore what they need to do is find some COVID, and just take a little bit of it. Job done

Chedney Honks

I think America has attempted something similar using ants as carriers but obviously it's too early to know how effective that will be.
