If (fingers crossed) we do get a vaccine fairly quickly, it makes you think.  Imagine how quickly other things like cancer could be cured if they were a threat to the economy.

(Cancer disproportionately affects those with capital and those who vote, and cancer funding is accordingly grossly outsized compared to other disease groups. The punchline is that an awful lot of cancer research funding buys you even more cancer healthcare spend as much as anything else.)

I note that the Chinese military is rolling out a vaccine.

I believe that their vaccine suffers from a problem.  It uses a human adeno virus, adenovirus-5, (Ad5), as a vector, modified to deliver genetic material from the SARS-CoV-2 (corona), virus, (which causes Covid19).

This delivered viral genetic material then hijacks your cells to make corona virus proteins that you generate an immune response to.  Making you have immunity to corona virus.

The problem is that about half the people already have an immune response to the Ad5 adenovirus being used so their immune system destroys it before it can do all the gubbins to let you develop immunity to the SARS-CoV-2.

You can get round this by using chimpanzee adeno virus as your vector, but they have not done so.

To draw a slightly dodgy analogy, imagine you have dogs and want to give each of them a pill.  The pill is like the genetic material from the corona virus. 

Your dogs won't just swallow it, so you hide it in a bit of bacon.  The bacon is like your Ad5 vector.  BUT half your dogs have tried bacon before and it makes them vomit.

So only half of them get the payload as intended because the other half reject the vector.

The Oxford Group are due to publish results, which will tell us more about their antibody and T-cell results, in the Lancet.  Can't see them yet though.

I'm actually on the Oxford vaccine trial. Going to the hospital this week to have my blood taken and then they attack it with Covid in a lab or something I bet.

The thing that strikes me about it is how bullish the woman leading it is. She keeps saying it'll work. Fuck knows what happens when they prove that though, or how they roll it out quickly enough to give us a "normal" Christmas, as promised by Johnson.

The article is referring to the flu vaccine having a 70% success rate, and the only 6 months I could see referred to was how long it takes to manufacture flu vaccines. As it doesn't exist yet, I doubt any claims about the effectiveness of a covid vaccine can be made reasonably.

Flu season is going to bad though. A normal flu season brings the NHS to breaking point.

The last point about a 70% success rate and 6 months effectiveness wasn't meant to be relating specifically to the Guardian article. It was just a general observation going from what I've read. From what I can gather a lot of new to the market vaccines have around a 70% success rate. The 6 month immunity is more an educated guess from various virologists I think. Clearly a lot about Coronavirus is still being learnt.

It's also the case that reality is not bleak as fuck and majority of people, even in this dogshit country, are concerned about the government response and intend to wear a mask when they're told to. They also prioritise public health over any other factors. That's somewhat reassuring, even if our own confirmation bias (or indeed empirical experience) tells us that our local area is full of ignorant people. I choose to believe ignorant over malicious.

Likewise, there's a lot of reason for optimism in terms of vaccine progress and the weight of manpower and funding being thrown at it to an unprecedented degree.

It's also quite apparent that we will have a good three months of relative familiarity, if not normality, until the weather gets worse and people are less able to socialise outdoors and other common winter public health factors come into play. Come November to February, it's likely to be pretty rough so enjoy and stay safe in the meantime.
