Meeting a mate at lunchtime for a catch-up and a pint.

Will report back...

We made up 40% of the total attendance.
Rather pleasant actually, despite there being no Scotch eggs.

It would be more tempting if the weather was hot and sunny, a beer garden and a cold cider would be hard to resist. But as the weather immediately turned to shit I'm giving it a miss at least for another week or two. I predicted this would happen because it just fucking would, wouldn't it?

Happy birthday for 4 weeks ago.

Same on the beer gardens.

The more you hear about this the more likely it seems we're going to be stuck with it forever.  Antivaxx is rife so even if we do get a vaccine apparently 1 in 6 have said they'll refuse it (a number which will no doubt go up as that's how the world works these days).  80% of positive tests are asymptomatic so it's going round everywhere with no one knowing they've got it until someone vulnerable catches it.  Weekly testing of the population is probably the only way out, good luck getting and distributing 3.4 billion testing kits per year and getting the population to actually report their results...

And so you think "well maybe it's time to switch to outdoor socialisation".  Traditional pubs, clubs etc die in favour of open air venues.  Here's the problem: it's England and 95% of the time it's fucking COLD and WET.

greencalx

Imagine if you lived in a place that's colder and wetter than England.

Sat in Kirkstall Bridge beer garden yesterday. Very spacious, no shenanigans, not overly busy. Weather was pleasant but a tad windy (it's Leeds). Felt as safe as I'd reasonably expect. They've probably got 3 months of that (half of which will be marred by bad weather) before they'll have to work out how to survive off indoor trade. Could be tricky.

(That's assuming cases and deaths keep at this level or rise, I don't see an issue with further relaxations once there's a nice steady track record to show the populations aren't infected enough for that to be a widespread issue)

We're having a Newcastle meet in a few weeks time...pop up if you dare.

Cheers, it was shit, got very drunk and spent ages scrolling around on Netflix looking for something to watch, can't even remember what I put on in the end, probably an episode of Breaking Bad I'd seen before or something in the end. What a night to remember, which I don't.

Are these the people who need drinking licenses?

Pub in Gloucester has a 60-person punchup on Super Twatterday. Here's the article, if you can find it amongst the adverts.

I think he's been left brain damaged by lockdown binges or being bashed up by boozers

QuoteThe landlord of the Ridge and Furrow in Gloucester has reiterated the pub rules after people "could not follow clear and basinc instructions".

BlodwynPig

That article is a shambles

QuotePub landlord of Ridge and Furrow threatens to close pub for "prolonged period" if people don't follow rules

QuoteHe added: "If there is any repeat of this then the pub will be closing for a prolonged period."

QuoteWhat the landlord of the Ridge and Furrow said in full

If there is any repeat of this then the pub will be closing for a prolonged period.

YEH, WE GOT IT ALREADY

Hairdresser today was telling me about his son who does security for a chain of pubs in Bucks. After last week when they had to put on extra security and then instigate a rapid response car to deal with trouble, they've decided this week they're going to only allow admission to over 30s. The bar staff are happier but the doormen are not looking forward to policing that.

idunnosomename

Wow, an old-fashioned barroom brawl! I hope someone had a chair broken over their head, and another slid down the length of the bar knocking off all the glasses.

Captain Z

One man was treated at the scene for shock after stumbling backwards into a chair that subsequently rocked over, and having his shirt pinned to the ground by darts that fell off the dartboard.

Bazooka

And a cross eyed yokle suffered from piano teeth.

bomb_dog

Not keen about the bloke going flying into a pinball table and it showing 'TILT' Lol

rack and peanut

Did the brawl stop momentarily for a wizened old lady to slowly hobble out of there, oblivious to the mayhem?

Forgive me for I have sinned... managed 6 days before cracking

Only went for one in the beer garden though.  Had to go through the pub - plenty of distancing and good behaviour (wasn't late), hand sanitiser on entry, forgot to give details (but they know who I am), screens up at the bar but table service only etc. But indoors was still a massive NOPE just due to how stuffy it seemed.  Need more ventilation. Glad to have only passed through

First time using cash since March as well because they're  still not in the 21st century

The pint (Abbeydale) was MUCH more worthy of the "angel pissing on my tongue" description than that Carling piss.. sooo good a first post lockdown pint, glad I didn't pick something shit.

Beer garden was near empty as it was cold, but rather be cold than covid.

Really weird being there, like a combination of a dangerous forbidden place and being in the past.

Felt safe enough, ready to eat my words in a week!

It's quite upsetting to think that going to the pub on a whim and it all being normal is just so alien now.

It has been for ages but all this shit has hit me this week, probably because work is so grim.

Yup. I love a weekly jaunt to a couple of bars on my own. Pack some headphones, hop on a train. Visit where takes my fancy, see who's at the bar or grab a chair in the street out front and watch the world go by while playing music. Can barely remember the last time I went on a planned visit to a pub to meet people at a specific time. That joy has all but gone for several more months at least

Why would you entertain going to a pub when you have free alcohol on the street?

there are alcohol free alternatives, the cretins.. No one is thinking are they? Blind leading the blind (resulting in more blinds, by the sounds of it)

Drove past what has always been the town's most crowded pub (massively popular with the younger Legend Gary lot).  Very very slowly as they were spilling into and staggering all over the road, pushing each other into it, running across it etc like the good old days.

One can only hope it wasn't like that indoors, or the second wave is inevitable.

JaDanketies

We ate in a restaurant for the first time in a long time today. Just a one-plate cafe-style meal. Felt a bit bad that the staff were putting themselves in danger for.my luxury but it really did make a big difference to the weekend. We've been looking after a baby with no respite beyond a takeaway since the start of March.

Pubs were allowed to reopen in Scotchland yesterday. Here in Embra I saw The Southsider had nae queue and was tempted to pop in but it seemed the overspill from The Grapes were all drinking in there and I didn't fancy it. It does feel as if the roughest pubs have been opening first (with the notable exception of The Grapes). Apart from that it's been the places with beer gardens, like The Pear Tree which had a massive queue yesterday and which just made me think "Fuck that".

Now enjoying my first post-lockdown pint in a nice pub near ma hoose which is being sensible but not OTT about things. No booking required, no queue, no black and yellow tape on the floor, it looks exactly like it did before lockdown. Everyone is behaving and no-one is making a fuss. It's not too busy and it feels reassuringly normal.

One of the regulars is in here and his cute doggo recognised me and got all excited but of course I couldn't go and fuss over the poor doggo and had to disappoint him. Nice to see he still remembers me though!

Ah this is nice.

Cloud

That first pint is just wonderful isn't it it?  It's weirdly like going back in time but very welcome.

Not been back since the weekend as the weather's been shit.  May have a look in the beer garden again tomorrow though.

Pranet

Had a couple of afternoon pints in my local's beer garden today. It was with my brother after our mum's funeral so I think we had an excuse. It was fine, may go again. But still wouldn't want to go when it was busy or sit inside.
