Mr Eggs

I'm really tempted by the new design Flash Powermop.

The rights of cis women and trans women being in any meaningful conflict. I was never a terf, but for a long time my position was a blithely uncritical "trans people are cool... but feminists are cool too... and now they don't seem to like each other??? ☹️☹️☹️ I hope they work it out 😊😊".

I had a vocal terf friend in the early 2010s, and I don't think there was any mainstream scrutiny of their specific strain of bullshit then, so I tended to take his claims at face value. These days, his feminist credentials (quoted Andrea Dworkin sometimes, had a Tumblr header pic of Patty and Selma) have fallen by the wayside, and he's a Breitbart-and-assorted-fash retweeter who still purports to be somewhere on the left but sacked Corbyn off because he said his pronouns once and hasn't this Black Lives Matter nonsense gone too far now what's your problem with the police guys?

I think it was earlier than that I used to sympathise with that little sect of clearly disturbed "PIV 👏 IS 👏 ALWAYS 👏 RAPE 👏" proto-terf bloggers, who at least appeared to start from a position of Penises Are The Enemy before stumbling into Well I Guess That's Gotta Include Trans Women rather than starting from bigotry and working backwards – but maybe that was just naivety on my part. In any case, I was never able to sympathise with the comfortable middle-class prosecco-horking down-punching journo types who later became the faces of terfism.

Graham Linehan getting involved was the last nail in the coffin for me. Nobody on the side of good would be this much of a disingenuous cunt.

I voted Lib Dem in 2005/2010, my first two elections.

I done a LibDem-dozy in 2010.

Nu-metal
This is a good one. I was caught by this as it was the ascendant musical trend just as I started getting the Internet and Napster etc. and I was closeted enough to think it was underground and cool

I made some very foolish fashion choices and adopted a swagger that did not befit my natural demeanour.

Hmmmmmm....

we're talking over a decade ago here. But yeah, I was never anti-immigration. It didn't fit in with my libertarian perspective; it's never really fit in with any ideology I've held.

Nu metal was good. Bodies by Drowning Pool is still a banger. As are Slipknot, SOAD

Whitehouse

haha me too. I tried to convince myself that Power Electronics is anything more than socially crippled badly dressed men who are ashamed to be goths, and used to excuse all that early 80s edgelord shit they did. Cummings makes me think of P Best too much, it's awful. See also all the associated Apocalypse Culture Parfrey bullshit - all absolute cunts. Growing up on hip hop and rave music amd considering myself an anarchist/socialist always made liking this stuff an uncomfortable fit for me, cognitive dissonance really - took a former associate going far-right for me to shit myself and see sense.

Same with TOPY and all that stuff - very slightly dabbled when I was about 16 but house music saved me from that shit. I like Psychic TV and Throbbing Gristle but GPO was a fuckin lowlife really. Far too much sketchiness in all that stuff, including Coil.

I used to say things like "actually, noise music is a lot more difficult to compose than melody", referring to Whitehouse saying they took years to make their tracks in some interview or other. Absolute fuckin bullshit, noise is a piece of piss to make, any fool can do it, it's just most people can't be arsed.

I don't really count SOAD as nu-metal, I think they just happened to be around at the same time and were a bit different. Deftones were very similar in that respect. I really like Slipknot, especially the first two albums[nb]I mean the proper first two albums, not Mate Feed Kill Repeat[/nb] - they fit the description of 'nu-metal' a bit better, but were still an edge case imo. 'Bodies' is a fun song but I don't think Drowining Pool were much cop; similar to how 'Break Stuff' is great dumb fun but Limp Bizkit are awful.

I originally typed 'Linkin Park' so it's their ilk I really mean - yer Papa Roaches and the like who were all very weak sauce.

Yes that's very similar to me, IIRC from other posts you've made in the past I think we're very similar ages (I'm 36). It was kinda the punk of my generation in the sense of being the fashionable ugly noise and moral panic, which is a bit sad but at least it served as a gateway to a lot of much better music.

So, given that you were having none of the " keep the immos out" policy, what was it that you found so appealing and voteworthy about the UKIP ideology? Were you just bowled over by suave ol' Robert Kilroy- Silk? I wouldn't blame you if you were.
( would actually be genuinely interested in your answer.)

Well like I said, they were Libertarian. Small government, lasseiz faire capitalist. They even called for drug reform back then, only they and the Greens wanted to legalise weed. They legitimately did used to have classic Libertarian policies, i.e fiscally conservative and socially liberal.

I was a fool though, I didn't appreciate how fiscally conservative and socially liberal is almost an oxymoron. I honestly thought that billionaires would fund social services through philanthropy, or maybe some idea that it was in their benefit for society to have these services so it was worth the expense to them. Now I see that fiscally conservative means throwing vulnerable minorities to the wolves. "I like minorities, but I also like the structures that oppress them." And the idea that The Market will do anything about climate change is obscene, it's like saying petrol will do something to put out fires. I didn't have an issue with wealth redistribution back then, I would have considered it the 'politics of envy'.

UKIP weren't all about getting the foreigners out back then, or maybe it was but they weren't quite as brazen about it and couched it in a more respectable manner. I guess I considered the argument that an African or Asian should be able to immigrate here just as easily as a European.

Other factors that might be relevant to my former libertarianism include that I had never held down a full time job

Iirc at the time Milroy thought that UKIP weren't racist enough and formed his own racist party Veritas
