Phil Collins - Even though the cunt divorced his dying wife by fax and was a fundraiser for the local Tory party.

This isn't true is it? Started as a rumour by the Gallagher brothers, which is the reason Collins gave for putting them in Room 101. He claimed to have never supported or endorsed the Toris.

Depends on your definition of PROPER PEODO, but he was jailed on charges of downloading abuse images of very young children, so beyond being able to even call it hebephillia/ephebophilia.

During his trial one of his defences was that he downloaded the stuff as research for a role on Paul Whitehouse's Help. Interestingly (if you can call it that), his trial took place in 2007 but according to Wiki:

Quote
He was found not guilty of six counts of indecent assault and two counts of buggery between January 1996 and April 2000.

I didn't think buggery was something you could be charged with as late as 2007.

However, it was not until 2000, with the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2000, that the age of consent for anal sex was reduced to 16 for men and women. In 2003, the Sexual Offences Act significantly reformed English law in relation to sexual offences, introducing a new range of offences relating to underage and non-consensual sexual activity that were concerned with the act that occurred, rather than the sex/gender or sexual orientation of those committing it. Buggery in as much as it related to sexual intercourse with animal (bestiality) remained untouched until the Sexual Offences Act 2003, when it was replaced with a new offence of "intercourse with an animal".

Eesh.

I read that, but it's not clear whether the 2000 Amendment did away with the term for non-animal offences, or whether crimes could be prosecuted retrospectively after the act. It could be a colloquial rather than a legal use of buggery, of course. The best kind of buggery IMO.

Depends on your definition of PROPER PEODO, but he was jailed on charges of downloading abuse images of very young children, so beyond being able to even call it hebephillia/ephebophilia.

He paid money for videos of young children being raped. His denial about being a proper pedo makes me want to condemn him even further. If you do something awful, the least you can do is hold your hands up, rather than bleat that you funded child rape 'for research'. The Thick of It was brilliant but Chris Langham didn't write it so I can simply imagine that any other decent actor could play his role.

Evidence from wiki:

Langham had paid with his credit card for access to a site entitled "European Lolita Sex" in 1999.... Before sentencing, the judge said that "some of the children viewed are clearly prepubescent... The worst video was 15 minutes long and it showed in quite graphic detail the sadistic brutalisation of an eight-year-old girl in the UK, with some serious sexual offences against her".... Dame Heather Steel, who gave the decision, said that the court viewed Langham's explanation that he viewed the child porn for research as "highly improbable" but could not actually reject it, although he was still guilty of encouraging "despicable acts" through downloading the pornography.

Yet after doing his time, he said: "My life has been ruined but my conscience is clear" and complained that the media "completely ignored" the court's "acceptance based upon all the evidence and expert opinion that I have no sexual interest in children".

Fuck that piece of shit.

Boy George has also taken to denying that he ever tied that guy up to a radiator, attacked him and threatened him with sex toys, despite that he actually did time for it. And Boy George has been fully rehabilitated in the public's eye; he even judged on The Voice. I'm not sure if he got a free pass because of 'gay escapades' being more acceptable than what, say, Louis CK did.

Chinatown almost looks like a confession/apology before the fact highlighting how destructive abuse can be.

This isn't true is it? Started as a rumour by the Gallagher brothers, which is the reason Collins gave for putting them in Room 101. He claimed to have never supported or endorsed the Toris.

You're quite correct.  It also stems from the (now infamous) Piers Morgan interview in The Sun, where Morgan asked PC what he would do if Labour got in at the next election, to which the (printed) response was "I'd leave the country".  But that was heavily edited down from the ACTUAL response, which was something along the lines of "I'd leave the country, but then I'd leave the country whoever got in as they're all as bad as each other."

Morgan and/or The Sun had to apologise to PC and they later had to make the transcript of the whole interview available.  In it, he elaborates more on his "politics" - he followed up the comment with the fact that he spent very little time in the UK (he actually hasn't lived in the UK full time since 1978) and said that he hadn't voted in any UK election since the 70s because he spent so much time on tour that he wasn't able to make an informed decision.  He also explained that his dad - who WAS a tory fundraiser (which is maybe where that rumour originated) - had completely abandoned the party (I can't remember if he switched to labour or lib dem) by the time Thatcher was in charge as he didn't agree with most of their policies and he particularly disliked Thatcher (he was no fan of Edward Heath either).

The dumping his wife by fax thing is also media bollocks - they had already been separated and divorce proceedings were already underway.  The fax was actually a settlement (which his ex wife faxed to him - because he was on tour with Genesis here in the UK whilst she was in the States, so that was the only way to do it).  The reason it made the news is because he added an angry hand written note because part of the settlement was that he was not allowed any access to his daughter (Lily Collins), which obviously upset him a bit.  That's also why that divorce took so long to finalise (three years I think).

I may as well (again again) briefly mention other things about Phil Collins that aren't true, and have proven to be so:
Anti-semite;
Tax dodger (he took out legal action on that one, and won hands down);
Verbally abused a young boy with cerebral palsy who was in a coma;
Used to phone music magazines when they gave his albums a bad review (only partially true - he used to phone them whenever they got technical details incorrect, like when something was attributed to the wrong musician for example);
He's a Freemason

I honestly don't care what people think about his music (lord knows I think all of his solo work after But Seriously is utter toilet), but it does annoy me that so many people buy into all of the above, and have done for SO long.  No wonder he disappeared for a few years and turned to alcohol and was suicidal.

Would 'recommend' the Kinski Uncut book for the sheer insanity.

My overriding memory of that (I read it when it came out and not since) was him basically saying he wanted to fuck Nastassja.

More generally, and I've mentioned this a few times before, I used to REALLY struggle with the fact that I loved a few Polanski films and being a huge fan of Woody Allen's earlier films (although the only thing Woody is definitely guilty of so far is being a bit of a dirty old man, which these days is quite minimal in relative terms), until someone on here mentioned the fact that loads of the Italian Renaissance artists basically raped their young boy students/assistants.  Since then I've had absolutely no trouble detaching a person from their work.

Oh. I think my mind had blocked out the fact that he downloaded images of children for ‘research’.
All I remembered was that he had a ‘relationship’ with a girl of about 15, and he denied it was sexual.

William Burroughs and Alan Ginsberg should have been cancelled. Great authors, I love their stuff. Kerouak was a bad introduction to Beat literature but them two guys, A+. Burroughs shot his wife - who he probably didn't even love, judging by the fact he was 100% gay - dead 'as part of a game' and was a pedophile. Ginsberg was also a pedo, even going so far as to support NAMBLA.

I'm a big hypocrite I guess, getting so mad about Chris Langham but loving these beat writers. Also Michael Jackson. And Bowie.

I think the only times I feel uneasy about the work of #cancelled people is when the nature of their #cancelling is reflected in their work. For example, I can still laugh at some of Louis CK's material, but any time he refers to his own sexual activities, especially his experiences with women or masturbation, it just doesn't sit right. That Louie scene of him attempting to kiss Pamela Adlon and force her to stay in the apartment - eesh...

Still love the music of MJ and Morrissey, though I'm definitely less likely to sing along to them loud and proud.

Kurt Cobain is a good example of this for me

This is easy mode though! Great artists who died young had less opportunity to say something objectionable. Keeps 'em out of the dodgy "cantankerous old codger weighs in with hot take about topical issue debated by the youths" phase.

EDIT: I agree with everything you said in your post.

The worst thing about Phil Collins wasn't that his wife was dying - that's just a scurrillous rumour put about by trouble makers - its that she didn't even have a fax machine (never has!) and to this day still believes she is Mrs Collins, Phil's second wife, much to amusement of those she encounters in her day to day business.
