Yer, as a recovering medievalist, I can second that the plague (unless it goes nuts and mutates) is pretty easy to treat -- there are a handful of cases in the world every year (including Arizona, so it's not just a 'third world thing.')

That said, older strains of it might be problematic. I got to dip into a collection of shoes at the V & A about 15 years back. They had all been recovered from a medieval plague pit in London. I had to sign a waiver that if I contracted the earlier version of the plague that my relatives couldn't sue them for any liability. (It's anaerobic, so there could well have been dormant cells on the shoes eager to wake up, sniff the air, and latch onto my 21st century lungs, &c).
