Your Favorite Examples of "Angry Humor"?

As much as I love to laugh, I usually need it mainlined via stand-up comedy, Bill Hicks, George Carlin.. Mort Sahl might be my funniest, but he doesn't show his anger much during stand-up, although he does in interviews, many which are very funny.

The only show I can think of that has some funny writing is "The Larry Sanders Show" and although Garry Shandling is the star, creator, and sometimes writer of the show, to me it's Rip Torn's anger that makes me laugh. Even in the first one, "I killed a man like you in Korea!" over and over.

Joe Pesci is a guy who is usually funny, again, when he's angry.. I'm thinking specifically of the scene in Casino, the "Charley M" scene.

Some examples of movies.
La Strada - When Zampano is trying to teach Gelsomina how to introduce him, he tells her to say, "Here he is..... ZAMPANO!" and she's not in the mood, bring thrusted into this life only because her sister died, and because her family needs the money, she barely musters enough energy and says without any energy.
"Zampano is here" --- very funny, great turn of a phrase.

-One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest -- Lots of little interesting things, mostly Jack Nicholson, even though Danny Devitto is usually funny (in the show, "It's Always Sunny.." and also in "Twins").... My favorite humor scene is when Jack is being analyzed by a handful of psychiatrists, and is asked by the man with the glasses and red-brown mustache "What do you think the phrase 'A rolling stone gathers no moss'' he answers it, and then throws the analogy, "Well, its kinda like the phrase "Don't do your dirty laundry in public", and then the analyst looks confused and says, "I don't think I understand".. Then Jack looks at the Indian doctor and says, "See, I'm smarter than he is!" (funny how he deduces that)

-Buffalo '66 -- The time with his parents is funny.. After they leave, he (Vincent Gallo) tells Christina Ricci (mocking her voice) "He works at the CIA. Everyone loves him. The president loves him"....
"Do you think my father believed that for one minute?" he tells her angrily.

-A Woman Under the Influence -- to me, the funniest woman I've ever seen on the big screen wasn't even an actress - it was John Cassavetes' mom! I always smile when they have the coming home party for Muriel, and at one point she asks/laments "Coca-Cola?" and probably repeats it again with more words....

-Minnie and Moskowitz -- again, its Katherine Cassavetes who is funny. Especially how she degrades her son, Seymour Cassell.

So many examples from Peep Show - but then again, too many to mention.

The Thick of It is an obvious one. Some people tired of Malcolm's rants, but they still bring me out in laugh-hives.

Morris chastising the jam fundraiser in The Day Today.

Stewart Lee is often sublime at the in-character onstage rant. And offstage, if he's wading across the balconies.

And so concludes my liberal-English-comedy-fan's list.

Cuellar

The guy in Chewin' the Fat that's always trying to do fiddly tasks and keeps fucking it up and has a total breakdown, smashing everything in sight.

Always especially enjoyed that bit of Screenwipe where Charlie's runner brings him the wrong fizzy drink.

QuoteWhat the fuck is wrong with you? How dare you? Actually, how dare you? Actually how dare you? How dare you do this to me? This is a fucking insult. You're fired. You're fired from London.

From the original Toy Story, Woody's "YOU. ARE. A. TOYYYYY!!!" and subsequent exasperated rant after a pre-disillusionment Buzz Lightyear accuses him of disrupting his rendez-vous with Star Command is probably still my favourite example.

I'm not sure how well it holds up, but the entire premise of Windy City Heat is that the main guy gets increasingly angry.

Lewis Black also had some excellent stand-up specials in his heyday, all in his angry style.

Every On Cinema Oscar Special.

That was one of the highlights of seeing them live. They got an audience member up to participate at one point. Tim got annoyed at Greg and when the guy tried to say something, Tim just screamed SHUT THE FUCK UP.

My favourite moment in Snuff Box is Rich Fulcher's unhinged, out-of-scale, vibrating rant at "David Bowie". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYBtg8lFgfg

PlanktonSideburns

been enjoying megan koester's standup recently, shes pretty angry

I didn't care for Windy City Heat overall, but the bit where the main guy reaches a crescendo of anger and his voice suddenly goes incredibly high-pitched has stayed with me.

BrahmanOK

Rewatched Punch Drunk Love for the first time in years last week and it is chock-full of funny angry outbursts.

Adam Sandler is more funny when trying to hold the anger in but the full on Philip Seymour Hoffman SHUT UP scene is hilarious:

"Hi my name's Barry Egan and I called your serv-"
"Why don't you shut the fuck up?"
"Oh what's that?"
"I said why don't you calm down and shut the fuck up."

Haha! Yes, I love this too. Also the Elton John one - not as furious but good.

Angry Rik and Ade just improvising could easily be transcribed straight to script (while The Outer Limits boys struggle to keep up):

Have you ever heard the original idea for Toy Story where Woody was a fucking cunt?

Also, there was a very similar "YOU ARE A TOY!"-level anger from Hanks in The Burbs that absolutely cracked me up as a child. I think I must have watched it at a young enough age that it informed my comedic sensibilities a lot

Shame they spoiled the movie's message pretty shortly after this scene

kalowski

I know it's the obvious one but Basil threatening the car is delightfully angry. When he's so far gone that he waits for the car to start, without actually being in it, is just brilliant.
QuoteCome on! Come on! Start! Start, you vicious bastard! Come on! Oh, my God! I'm warning you! If you don't start... I'll count to three! 1, 2, 3! Right! That's it!

I'd read about that on TV Tropes, but had never seen that storyboard, thanks for linking. I'm intrigued by the boss/enforcer relationship that Woody and Slinky apparently had at that stage in development, as opposed to the more mellow relationship in the final piece. I wonder if it served as the model for Lotso and Big Baby in TS3?

I think Mannion had the best anger: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqUTLQREWwY

He was way too likable for what his character represented.

Oddly enough, my favorite funny scene is when Jeremy goes into the church, sees that pastor, and says flippantly and without reverence,

"Good song"

:) :) :)

Sam Kinison was a good shouter and is either owed a lot or has a lot to answer for depending on which way you look at it.

I always liked Jamie seemingly being too angry to take his key out in a fluid motion when he's trying to threaten Robyn with it.

Noodle Lizard

It almost goes without saying, but Jerry Sadowitz is by far the angriest stand-up I've ever seen, and it feels genuine and uncontrolled. One moment that'll live with me forever is the audience beginning to laugh at one of his more offensive statements and him just instantly snapping "OH FUCK YOU!"

You can't move for comedians (especially younger ones) talking about how angry they are, but it never really feels like it. For some reason, there sticks in my head an episode of Hollywood Babble-On where fucking Ralph Garman of all people is going on about how he's the angriest person on earth, despite being an incredibly successful co-host of one of LA's biggest morning radio shows at the time, and his anger would usually manifest itself in the form of saying "Kim Kardashian is SO DUMB!"

So authenticity of anger is important to me, I suppose. I think the ending of Deadbeat Hero from Doug Stanhope is great (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg-X8HWAB1M), as is Bill Burr's famous Philadelphia rant (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jMhoGUiIkk).
