I'm currently blasting out Abner Jay's I'm So Depressed and feeling very sad but in a self-indulgent sort of way, my other usual go-to for this is Dear God, I Hate Myself by Xiu Xiu (see below for links). Other classics for moping include Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now and pretty much any of Sufjan Stevens's acoustic work.

what are your favourite songs to be miserable to?

Ernest Soul Wilson - Pick Them Up; 1974; JA 7" Studio One; SC 118A; Producer: Clement "Coxsone" Dodd

You don't get to be miserable for long but Kim Deal's 'Likkle More'

Gregory Torso

This always brings me out in tears, it reminds me of my wife when we were first together, when she'd sleep next to me, the little sounds she'd make as she dreamed, was she dreaming of me? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmsbP13xu6k

Sin Agog

There are different shades and stages of miserabilism.  Way down there on the bottom when you and your world are eminently breakable, everything can sometimes take on a glassy beauty, like the material world is more illusory than the great beyond.  Never heard that sensation captured better than in Luciano Cilio's lovely minimalist chamber album Dialoghi del Presente (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ae3F0wcot-M).  Dude killed himself a few years later at that massive hurdle of 33 which took out Jesus, Sam Cooke, Lester Bangs, Cobain and, uh, Stephen Gateley.

I've said it before and I'l say it again. The greatest feeling sorry for yourself ever song is Jealousy by Pet Shop Boys. I lie alone, the clock strikes three, and anyone who wanted to could contact me....

I'm actually in tears just thinking about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chq885RKXAI

Bazooka

Happy - Pharrell Williams, it's so awful.

Marner and Me

Anything by REM, Radiohead, Adele and Sam Smith, proper slit the wrists dreary music.

D by Codeine. In fact, everything Codeine have ever done. Start with Frigid Stars.

April Rain - Songs for Someone

The Bowie Space Oddity cover at 5:56 is especially special

Good shout with the Sufjan Stevens, OP. The Carrie and Lowell album helped me deal with the grief of losing my dad, as weird as it sounds to say that an album could help you with a loss like that.

I do like a bit of American Music Club.

Purple Toupee

You can't go wrong with The Magnetic Fields, Stephin Merritt has dozens and dozens of great songs to be miserable to.

I Don't Believe in the Sun
The Desperate Things You Made Me Do
Busby Berkeley Dreams

Puce Moment

I could post so many, but I will go with something I listened to this morning:

Very late to this party, as usual.

Oz Oz Alice

When I'm in this mood (it's unfortunately a large percentage of the time) I find Coil's Ape of Naples really hits the spot. Nothing to do with the fact Balance died before it came out as I had no idea this was the case when I first heard it. His voice was a uniquely mournful instrument and midway into this the duduk continues the thread perfectly: https://youtu.be/Lx_LzudjEcY

Joy Division's Closer, specifically the final 3 tracks - Twenty Four Hours, The Eternal and Decades. Even more so the last song the band wrote, the funereal In A Lonely Place, the demo recordings of which were made 4 days before Curtis took his own life. New Order's version is not a happy listen, but those demos with him singing those lyrics can only be described as bleak. Personally I don't think they should ever have been released.

rue the polywhirl

Cure - Disintegration album, Tears For Fears - Mad World, Change, Shout and others, Joy Division - I Remember Nothing, Sonic R soundtrack.

never heard this but it's incredibly sad and really lovely, good find

The mix of Dinah Washington's "This Bitter Earth" with Max Richter's "On The Nature Of Daylight" always does it for me. Beautiful desolation.

It doesn't get much more crushing than Sinatra's Only The Lonely LP though, a tour-de-force of orchestral misery.

Thanks to this recommendation I played Frigid Stars last night then abruptly ordered it off Discogs.

Venetian Snares - Traditional Synthesizer Music

The whole album is a fest of discordant beautiful meloncholy

Not sure if miserable is the right word, but this song always makes me cry. Hauntingly beautiful. You'll probably know it off of Kill Bill:

Red House Painters is the ultimate wallowing music.

New Jersey is a good example

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjHDqcEhwDU

QuoteYou're an American girl
Red headed, eyes blank
Living in a freckle on the face of the world
Another dying kid that learned too much too soon
You're not as good as your Mom, but you're as good as dead
You're as good as dead, New Jersey ain't the whole world
Which of your shots have sold?
Twenty-nine with your child
Who doesn't give and eats what's left of your young soul

Fucking hell.
