never heard this but it's incredibly sad and really lovely, good find

The entire Antony & the Johnsons discography is quite fantastic and worth seeking out, particularly I Am a Bird Now (2005) and The Crying Light (2009)

New Order's version is not a happy listen, but those demos with him singing those lyrics can only be described as bleak. Personally I don't think they should ever have been released.

I love how the video poster boasts how they made the vocals louder. Just so we can hear those lyrics, no doubt. I'll pass, I think.

It was telling that the passage in question was omitted when the demo was released on Heart and Soul. That's the way it should have stayed, really.

Joy Division's Closer, specifically the final 3 tracks - Twenty Four Hours, The Eternal and Decades. Even more so the last song the band wrote, the funereal In A Lonely Place, the demo recordings of which were made 4 days before Curtis took his own life. New Order's version is not a happy listen, but those demos with him singing those lyrics can only be described as bleak. Personally I don't think they should ever have been released.

Side two of Closer is the finest side of vinyl ever IMHO. Ceremony and IALP only highlight how they still hadn't peaked.

Woke up sad from a dream this morning and had the urge to play

'Someone Great' - LCD Soundsystem

Probably a stupid idea as it made me cry a bit.

This Red House Painters kinda evokes a similar vibe to Hospice by the Antlers

One of the most crushing bands in the post-rock genre imo are Japanese soul-destroyers Mono. I would say Godspeed You Black Emperor deserve a mention too!

The entire discography of Motion City Soundtrack is drenched in self-pity, but oddly energising rather than depressing. My daughter's favourite band when she was in those difficult teenage years...

Poobum

Not quite songs to be miserable to, but more to experience a bittersweet yet cathartic melancholy to.

College & Electric Youth - A Real Hero. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DSVDcw6iW8
This is one that genuinely hurts to listen to. Breaks me down.

Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izQsgE0L450

If you're depressed, go kill yourself somewhere else!

Jockice

A teenage favourite of mine. Played loud when I was in a mood, which was most of the time. I'm gonna kill myself, k-k-kill myself. My parents weren't too fond of this one.

(It does say 'do not estimate their capacity for self parody' in the run-out grooves. I believe the band ended up becoming The Apollinaires who later recorded for 2-Tone.)

There's a quiet everyday sadness to this that makes it devastating.

Back In The Car Park from the same album is another devastator.

CLICHE ALERT!!! Got to be I Know It's Over by The Smiths.

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.
I know it's over

This is a proper cryer. Especially if you're dealing with a breakup.

Anyway, for the same reason this... Failure. Stuck on you. (it's about drug addiction apparently but works as a heartbreak song)
