Caravan/frying pan shenanigans aside, the original Fleischer cartoons are brilliantly barmy.

How can you not like it? It's such an unapologetically odd concoction that I can't help but be charmed by it. Not to mention the wonderful soundtrack.

E.C.Segar's original comic strip, Thimble Theatre is a wonder to behold. Olive Oyl and her dad were characters even before Popeye was created.

I like the idea that it was once fine to just name your restaurant after a well known fictional character that eats your speciality. I wonder how long it would take for the legal letters to arrive if I opened Homer Simpson's Pork Chops restaurant?

I feel like Popeye was close to dead when I was a kid in the 90s. He had that revival in 1980 with the Robin Williams film as people who grew up on him suddenly had full control of Hollywood and figured they could force their childhoods onto kids now (see also: Warren Beatty and Dick Tracy) and was just slowly vanishing off the face of the earth after that.

actually that reminds me, that one of the things that really sells the early popeyes is Jack Mercer's bizarre muttering. when he stopped doing that it started sucking. the 40s ones are appalling, with the likes of that Shorty character in them.

with the aversion to black and white that happened in the 90s, the shitty later ones tended to get more exposure. and the hastily colourised versions

Mubi had is 1930's brush with Sinbad on recently. Really nice mix of model photography with the animation roto'd on top.

My brother used to sing
He's Popeye the sailor man
He fought in Afghanistan

I forgot the rest of the lyrics but they involved him losing his hands??? I think this was meant to refer to the Soviet-Afghan war, not the laugh-a-minute US intervention.

The ice creams fans round here all still play the Popeye theme. Is that his legacy?

We somehow had it on a purchased VHS tape - no idea who would have bought it in our house - and I hated it as a kid.  Such a strange atmosphere and none of it sat well with my brain.

But now I think it’s a masterpiece.  Brilliant that they managed to get that cast together for what could have easily ended up being - with Hollywood in charge - more in the spirit of the Saturday morning cartoons than the Segar comics.

And you know they didn’t just have colour added - they were completely retraced and botched in the process.  The animation was rushed, introducing countless mistakes, and all the lovely 3D backgrounds were replaced with hurriedly drawn ones.

Popeyes in Sheffield doesn't specialise in spinach as far as I know. Although it is the only place I've ever bought a kebab from. Once and once only.

Not long after I moved here I passed Popeye's on the top deck of a bus. There was a young lass eating her chips in the window, with properly glam hair and make-up; it was my most Martin Parr real life moment and I remember it fondly.

Popeye needs to keep all the spinach for himself, so it’s no wonder they aren’t casually slipping it into their kebabs.

The All-New Popeye Show was a bleak marker in my childhood. A sign that it was so much summer that you couldn't trust the children's programmes now. Summer was always the time off. All the good telly wound down around April and children were not spared. That crucial half four to six period where tea could come at ANY time, and you were starving, impatient and something still hyper, you needed a fix of exciting or amazing stuff. For the middle four months, you had a lottery. Australian Sci Fi and anything about the likes of Rémy Julienne were yer jackpots, the tenner was like The Lowdown because the music was good and you could do the spinny arms thing, plus it was all grainy kids that lived lives that seemed as dreary as ours. You might get a run of What's The Noise and Craig Charles with licence to arse about with his mates in the name of music education as something in the middle, but wins were very rare in this draw. Trad Popeye then the wee ginger seargeant screaming then Popeye but WAIT! it's Caveman Fucking Times, made well after the Flintstones! ropey oul' shite, and utterly fucking grating. Especially that middle bit. It could've the CND in it's tracks, that. After Olive Oyl in the army, you'd be keen on global genocide too.

That wee 30-90 minute window stayed the whole summer. One annoying, but necessary blip. Waiting for a scran during the most potentially exciting part of the year, and the expected quick-hit distraction just isn't pulling its weight. Suppose they need holidays too.

I grew up very hypersensitive to light, and I'm still rating Popeye as worse than dealing with about four months of painfully bright days

I'm crap at copying pictures, but here it is. Long time since I've been in there though.

It's gone! I've just driven through the city centre and it's been done up and replaced by Pasim Kebab. I'll miss it. Even though it's about a quarter of a century since I was last in there. I may set up a petition.

The All-New/All-Star/New Adventures Of/Kids/And Friends version of any cartoon is usually pretty bleak.
