Thread to discuss the armageddon on a knife edge that is Australia. 3 Billion animals killed in the January super-fires, now it looks like the relatively gentle impact of SARS-CoV-2 is about to tip into the amber zone.

Perhaps that warrants a thread given our antipodean contingent.

All different shades of shit, but there's something about a nation that has gone through New York and New Jersey being hit 4 times as bad as any other nation or state on Earth and still not learning from that.

By contrast Australia seemed to have dealt with it pretty early, and they were never hammered by this in the first place, perhaps complacency has crept in. I imagine they should deal with these new cases at state level/target more locally and see if that makes a difference without having to enforce another nationwide lockdown.

Seems to have been primarily focused around Victoria for whatever reason.

covered a few weeks ago in the Economist.

QuoteVictoria's problems started with breaches of the mandatory two-week isolation for those arriving from abroad.

Blame has been levelled at poorly trained private security guards who were supposed to keep travellers in their rooms. They had not been using protective gear properly and have been accused of breaching social-distancing rules by sharing cigarettes and car-pooling to work. Local papers report that some had sex with the people they were supposed to be keeping in strict isolation. Several of the guards contracted the virus and passed it on to friends and family just as Victoria's first lockdown, the toughest in Australia, was being lifted.

"This is what happens when you think you've got it under control," says Peter Collignon, an expert on infectious diseases at the Australian National University: "apathy and complacency".

Think they had a local lockdown back in early July, so it will only just be starting to bring the deaths etc statistics back under control.

Australia could be turbo fucked if it spreads to rural areas already ravaged by wildfires and underfunding

You've gotta remember the bit where the fires are and the bit where people actually live are two different areas entirely, like the UK and Slovenia.

Basically, we're getting a crash course in exponential modelling, watch one case turn into hundreds!

Our media is mainly Murdoch, which has been banging the drum for re-opening and which has strangely become quiet over the past few weeks, where as rumor has it, a "hired over whatsapp for a private company contracted to do security work" security guard had intimate relations with a person under quarantine. Add in sectors of work where the poorest, migrant-est people work for people who barely give lip service to the rules and you've got an outbreak, like the meat packers in Germany and the servants in Singapore.

Add in a dose of "whoops, we didn't realize these were still the laws" as states initially started closing borders between each other, and now are being taken to the highest court by a rich prick over something which didn't make sense 100 years ago when it was written.

Victoria's been on lockdown for three weeks, at levels people in the UK would scoff at, but we've had a generation of American-style selfishness which means a quarter of people who should be in self-quarantine for two weeks have not been home when checked on.

Add in a dose of our PM being a reactionary conservative, like Boris having no real plan to do anything except if they find something they don't like, they'll do the opposite, (whilst of course selling everything off). Which means that unlike our neighbours in NZ, we could have had a COVID eradication plan, but mild handwaving and meandering federal decisions have kinda led us here.

And recently we've had the media giving publicity to a Q nutbag who lied through one of these border clousures, and a local psychic who videoed themselves going into a local hardware store and complaining about them discriminating against her because she's a woman for not wearing a mask.

If it wasn't so banal, it'd be funny.

And Boom - state of disaster declared for Victoria, and us filthy Melbournites are under a curfew effective from 8pm tonight.

As Premier Dan said: "The time for leniency, the time for warnings and cautions is over" - you fucked it up Melbourne, so now you can't have nice things.

QuoteThere are now 385 people in Victorian hospitals

Impressive, but just think how many UK citizens are in Victorian hospitals right now.

when they are gasping for air on a ventilator, make sure you play back the footage you recorded of them in their local hyper mart giving it the 'big man' vibes - then give them a massive grin and wink and walk out whistling. THAT WILL TEACH THEM.

People in Victoria now under curfew from 8pm-5am, you'll be asked to printout a form that your employer submits to the government if you're working in those times. All schools now remote. You can't travel more than 5km away from home to exercise or to shop (or to your closest etc. etc.) No visitors to houses. Weddings banned
People are expected to work from home if they can, most retail and all entertainment venues closed, food only takeaway etc.

This after today's new record of 725 cases and 15 deaths in a day (no, please, why are you laughing)
