Why do bluetooth headphones refuse to let me preview audio on my MacBook

This is BASTARD ANNOYING

On Mac, you can hit the space bar to preview a file. This is super useful when going through audio clips on my HD for Ableton stuff as I can quickly play a file without having to open it in VLC or whatever.

The MYSTERY is that when my bluetooth headphones are connected, previewing does fuck all. I tap the space bar and the preview thing opens but it just sits at 0:00 and doesn't play.

Everything else seems to work, I have audio from Spotify etc, and the headphones are selected in settings as the sound output.

What is HAPPENING

Maybe it's a default that assumes there is some kind of remote control for preview via the bluetooth connection.
