Poor, poor 1977, 1976 and 1975.  :(

I think Pastoral - To Die in the Country is my favourite movie from that year.  You can watch it in great nick here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJyDF1mNtsU

Good choice, that is indeed a superb movie and definitely deserves more love and acclaim, it was recommended to me by someone on here but I don't know many in real life who have seen it.

Sin Agog

Ah, nice.  It's so gorgeous to look at it.  That soundtrack by Japan's former 'male longest hair' competition winner always ratchets up the emotion.  Plus Terayama mining his own life for dark themes and rebellious energy.  But you know what, maybe I'm just a sucker for a good colour filter?  Glad you're into it so much, too.  There isn't really much else like it.  I once spoke to a dude who went to see Shuji Terayama's traveling theatre troupe put on a play in the '70s and he said the experience never ever left him.

Bazooka

Easy, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, it's my favourite film.

Bad Ambassador

10. Thunderbolt and Lightfoot.
9. The Towering Inferno.
8. Dark Star.
7. Black Christmas.
6. Juggernaut.
5. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.
4. Phantom of the Paradise.
3. Blazing Saddles.
2. Phase IV.
1. The Conversation.

many mentioned + Penda's Fen, Edvard Munch, Murder on the Orient Express.

Sin Agog

Oh fuck, Edvard Munch and Celine would also be up there.  It's so much better a year than 1978.

I haven't included documentaries, but Place de la Republique is one of my favorite documentaries

Ambient Sheep

The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and Dark Star were my first two thoughts, in that order.

I see Bad Ambassador beat me to it, though. :-)

Lots of other good ones here as well.
