Melvin Bliss - Synthetic Substitution.
The drums were by Bernard Purdie and have been sampled on hundreds of songs - Public Enemy's 'Don't Believe The Hype', The Orb's 'Supernova At The End Of The Universe', and so on.

There's a synth stab in there mate. DISFUCKINQUALIFIED

You could argue that it's an atonal rhythmic element (undoubtedly created by a synth though).

Love that tune.

mrfridge

There's a few bars of organ(?) prior to the drums kicking in, but this is still worth posting cos those drums are PROPER MONSTER.

Elvis - (I don't want to go to) Chelsea
Yep that's a great one. Really sets out the stall for the song.
In a Lonely Place by New Order and Dave Grohl bashing out the riff to Scentless Apprentice are the two that also come to mind but I guess neither are pop songs

The Mollusk

If none of the muscles in your body twitch even slightly in a manner of rhythmic knowing and enthusiasm when the drums of "Die, All Right!" by The Hives boot the door in then you're either a cunt or a liar.

Grohl is a drumming behemoth for sure (I would have nominated "Song for the Deaf" for this thread if it weren't for the filtered repetitive two-note guitar riff that accompanies it) but your example is definitely worthy of credit in equal measure to the magic of Steve "drums that sound like they're recorded in a dustbin that you've had your head shoved inside" Albini.

My memory is piss so the only other Albini example I can think of right now is "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues" by mclusky. It's just a really fast hi hat rhythm but it sounds like the fuse of a fucking great bomb that's about to go off. And that song goes off.

Lust For Life and New Rose spring to mind.
