People say this, but the Burton/Shumacher films are all schlocky fun, and there's no end of lighter Batman content away from the films. it's only really post-Nolan that we've got the darker film stuff, and it just fundamentally suits the character.

For me, it's less about the dark tone, more about the pursuit of realism. Personally, I don't really want a lighter take on the material, even if I would like a vision that was less grounded and more "Comic-booky". The world and character of Batman, while versatile, just really suits a brooding, dark vision.
a lighter take would just seem... well, lightweight, now. no-one's gonna do better camp than 60s batman. the character's changed a lot and i don't think you can just walk it back after beginning to reckon with his fascistic psychopathic nature, you know?

"ey bat man iss yersel mate"

Granted I watched this on my phone, but did they deliberately cut this to trick (some) people into thinking this will be Batman vs. Joaquin Phoenix's Joker?

Looks good though.

Butchers Blind

Is Joaquin Phoenix Joker, Affleck Batman universe or R-Patz Batman universe or another Batman universe?  Asking for a friend.

I've been tricked into feeling optimistic about that outcome by this trailer, for sure.

Custard

This is a universe all of its own, with no ties to any previous DC fillum, and presumably it's own Joker

Though I think they'd crowbar in Phoenix's version given half the chance. They'd have to explain the iffy timeline and why Alfred's face has changed yet his age hasn't, BUT IGNORE ALL THAT PLEASE

Will they ever ask directors like Justin Kurzel or Lynne Ramsay to have a go at this?

What's more likely is they'll see a Lynne Ramsey film about a guy with social anxieties, an unusual relationship with his mother and a penchant for violence and just nick it, star and all.

Well, Iron Man is a flippant war profiteer, and across the 10 films he featured in there were about 15 minutes or so reckoning with that vs hours of smarmy one liners and being held up as an icon of pure light and goodness, so I don't really see why Batman is so problematic we need to get all hand-wringy every time someone wears the cowl henceforth.

That said I think I agree that the problem isn't the dark tone so much as carrying on the pseudo realistic aesthetic and feel of the Nolan films. Aside from anything else I think it actually makes Batman seem sillier when the rest of the world around him is more grounded. The reveal of Batman standing there in the detective scene looks particularly silly.

that's the thing though, I think iron man is appalling and any time he is being held up as a pillar of light and goodness, they're not exploring anything meaningful. that kind of treatment isn't an example I think DC should follow - one of these companies has got to at least try doing something interesting!

Urinal Cake

There's light and campy Batman but it's for the kids.  The Lego movie, the cartoon series Batman the Bold and the Brave- who even teamed up with Scooby Doo.

Yeah, Matt Reeves is saying it's more focused on the detective side of the character, which sounds fresh and interesting

If he's going to be a detective then he probably doesn't need to kick quite so much shit out of that guy.

Custard

He was investigating just how many punches a human head can take before it falls off

Custard

Reeves is saying the main inspiration for the film comes from the Ego and Other Tails collection

Never got round to reading that one, so this seems like as good a time as any

Sin Agog

Please sign my petition to cancel this movie for propagating the falsehood that fish are idiots that don't have any feelings, when their memories actually last five months and longer.

Petition.

EDIT: They didn't use that part of the song. Nevermind.

Yeah, and the last one of those was 23 years ago. Since then it's been grimdark plops. Even the comics have transitioned to wacky, colourful OTT stories and back again (and back again again).

The Apes films were great and this will probably be great too. But I'm bored of seeing people encountering a grim "realistic" Batman over and over and over and over...

Sin Agog

The transitioning smacks of a cynical cycle whereby you can flip the Two-Face coin every time the Grimdark/Scorsesey Realism gets old or the Daygloschlock stops amusing, thus constantly keeping the property alive in some form or another.  100% after a few more of these there'll be some Adam Westification of the property at some point in the future.

Urinal Cake

I think DC has figured out Batman still has to be dark and gritty to offset newer, lighter properties like Aquaman and Shazaam. They really want the DCCU.

I suppose that is quite a long while (although I don't agree with the "plops" bit, several of those films are really good), I just think the problem is that the realistic aesthetic is getting tiresome now, and it would be nice to see something more heightened again - like Affleck's version, if those films and characterisation weren't a mess.

beanheadmcginty

To their credit though, they've finally addressed the one thing that had annoyed me about all modern Batmen - the eyeshadow problem. In this they actually show that he's wearing eyeshadow when he takes off his cowl. Whereas in all the others he has this magical eyeshadow that appears and disappears whenever required.

Kelvin

Proper sexy, this Batman, isn't he? Wouldn't look twice at the others, but I'd happily let Robert Pattinson pound me brutally in a dark alley.

Claude the Racecar Driving Rockstar Super Sleuth

It reminds me of Daredevil on Netflix.

Non Stop Dancer

Is Batman's bat car insured, and if so does he use a specialist broker or just use compare the market? What name does he put on the forms.?

Watching the trailer again, the extended beatdown on blokey feels really out of place with the rest of it. Though apparently Reeves is a big fan of Affleck's version, so I guess it makes sense he'd want something along the same lines in the trailer, however jarring. And as another poster pointed out, maybe it's there to show the doubters that Billy Twilight can throw fists too

If those are Jokers gang members, and they very much look like they are, does that mean there'll be another version of Joker in this too? Already? At this rate there'll be no one left for the next film. Man-Bat?

To be honest, although I'm a big fan of the comics and the 60s show, I prefer the more "realistic" tone recent films have gone for, especially Nolan's. Though I also agree that visually Bats standing next to normal people always looks ridiculous, though I guess there's not much they can do about that. Nolan's films kinda got away with it as they were mostly at night, so maybe do that. Forever

Thursday

Wow intriguing trailer. Can't wait to see why Batman has changed his name to vengeance.

It pisses me off mate, it's such a lazy criticism. Batman has always been dark/grim, the kid-friendly stuff is the outlier. Even Batman TAS, ostensibly a kids' show, is darker than fuck compared to contemporaries. The comics have been dark for decades, that's what I want, that's what I read, and I actually read them. I like Batman, I am a fan of it. I don't want it to become fucking MCU tier quippy bollocks. It's like when people make the incredible revelatory point that Bruce Wayne should use his wealth and influence to change Gotham's infrastructure and support people that way. He does. He always has. This isn't even subtext it's right there, but no, people with no interest in the character want to roll their eyes and get some Likes. Eat shit.

I think this looks good.

chveik

I'm no Batman expert but I remember quite liking the comics with the court of owls. they should make an adaptation of that.

although this film could be entertaining. I don't care that much either way tbh
