Irresistible . Purchased.

I used to think the Hi-De-Hi board game I used to own was the greatest piece of Hi-De-Hi related memorabilia but think that has it beat.

Thanks to this thread I've been inspired to trackdown a slightly tongue in cheek subversive/feminist interpretation of Su Pollard's episode of Disney Time I read in a book of media criticism back I read back in @96-99 when I was at collage (whole essay is on google books preview)

https://www.google.com/books/edition/Television_Mythologies/3_KIAgAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22disney+time%22&pg=PA27&printsec=frontcover

A spectacularly erudite examination of the phenomenon that was Disney Time there, as a kid watching Disney Time I was always puzzled that the BBC gave so much free advertising space away. Though I guess the dearth of any of the actual films on TV (remembering that there was no Sky cinema etc at the time)   meant that any Disney was better than none.

Spurred on by the mention of Su Pollard's beer advert in the above mentioned article I tracked it down via the magic of the Internet...

What strikes me is that this is appears to be use of original props from the show so the Beeb may have cooled on letting the stars do adverts in character. Or maybe the stars by now (this was around series four/five) had enough oomph to have it written into their contracts? Also, something I noted from the show, Peggy's overall was always too just too small which struck as a nice little touch from the costume department. (I would say the same about Sylvia's shorts but that might seem pervy).

I also happened across yet another advert with Su, this time as a nun - or is she???

https://youtu.be/oaGhV6-BB0I

Heh, don't think I've ever seen that Heineken advert before. The Lyons Maid commercial is very familiar now having watched it again... not to mention this Kit-Kat one where Su is joined by the late, great Roy Kinnear:

KitKat TV Advert with Roy Kinnear and Su Pollard, 1985.

It's all coming back to me! Except that I remember Kinnear but not Su as the wife!

Aha, right. Makes sense.

Also worth mentioning that Carry On ledge Kenneth Connor joined the cast in later series as Uncle Sammy, a replacement kids entertainer after Mr. Partridge went for a Burton (he also popped up in 'Allo 'Allo! of course. And Blackadder the Third, on a non Croft/Perry note).

Another behind the scenes clip, interspersed with some outtakes

https://youtu.be/E8B5TOjcQFc

Starts off with footage of the aftermath of the great storm of 1987 that hit Warners Dovercourt, the actual location for the show, just before final scenes were shot. Guess the Lord was miffed that the show was ending?

Whatever would Yvonne have made of it?

Karma galore Tony, that's wonderful! Proper HDH! bloopers! Couple of F-bombs and all... lovely send off at the end there.

On a somewhat darker note, here's Ben Aris (who played Julian Dalrymple-Sykes in the later series) in an old rabies PIF.

I am agog!!!!

It reminds me of some celebrity reality show a few years ago when one of the contestants' only claim to fame was having previously been married to a soap star. I remember someone who actually was reasonably famous (I could be wrong but it may have been Flavor Flav) looking absolutely astonished that this would qualify him as a 'celebrity.'

Guessing that would be Channel 5 The Farm.. from Wikipedia

QuoteIn the UK version of The Farm, the show puts a group of celebrities on a farm where they live together for a short period of time. On the farm, the contestants must do typical farmer work involving agriculture and animal rearing. At regular intervals, one of the contestants is evicted from the farm by way of a public telephone vote. This process is continued until only one contestant remains, and then they gain the title of "Top Farmer".

and the celeb you recall (second series) probabaly being

Quote
The celebrities that took part were (in order of finishing position):
Keith Harris & Orville the duck - Winners 'Top Farmer'
Mikey Green (popstar) - Runner Up
Emma Noble (model) - 8th Evicted
Dave Morgan (Jessie Wallace's former lover) - 7th Evicted
Ron Jeremy (porn star) - 6th Evicted
Emma B - 5th Evicted
Lionel Blair (dancer and presenter) - 4th Evicted
Flavor Flav (rapper) - 3rd Evicted
Charlene Tilton (actress) - 2nd Evicted
Cicciolina (porn star) - 1st Evicted

That's it. I'm not a reality TV fan and I think that's the only episode of that particular one I've ever seen. Thanks.

So, the unknown ex of someone I've never heard of.

At least I know who George Ezra Su Pollard is!

Imagine if beings on a planet orbiting a distant star are monitoring broadcasts from other planets, and in a couple of thousand years the transmissions from Earth reach them, but - due to freakish atmospheric conditions - the only programme they receive is this one?  What would they make of humanity?

If they saw the first series in which Rebecca Loos ( Famous having rumoured to have had an affair with David Beckham) wanked off a pig they may well write the whole planet off.

Except for the pigs. Sounds like they got quite a good deal.

Su Pollard's former husband has made a whole career out of having married Su Pollard (his Twitter bio starts "Married to Su Pollard for 8 years" and only then gets round to mentioning his current partner, who he's been with for 32 years).  I am tempted by his book, 'My Hi-de-High Life: Before, During and After Su Pollard', which is £2.99 for Kindle on Amazon at the moment.

The first review is "If you want to read a badly written book by the ex husband of 80's celeb Su Pollard then this is for you."  I wonder what the purchaser expected?
"Peter was also charged with theft which led to one of the most publicised trials of the day, receiving as much press coverage as the Falklands War."

"Filling in the Gaps: My Hi-de-High Life Sequel – Coming Soon" - I never knew I wanted this, but now I do.

"Before, During and After Su Pollard" might be my favourite book subtitle ever. It's wonderful.

One of the reviewers of the sequel appears to have read that one first. This is the gift that keeps on giving.

Ah yes that reviewer that says "shall now read his first book to fill in the other gaps".  So they've read the second one, explicitly called 'Filling in the gaps', first.  I'm disappointed to report that the reviewer failed to review the first book, so we'll never know his thoughts.

SavageHedgehog

I bet there are some tense snapshots of Penny Crayon recording sessions.

I bet he was in a worse place 'After' Su.*

Wasn't this always the way when actors on BBC programmes appeared on adverts - because the BBC had the copyright on the characters?  (Also remember the Homebase adverts with Neil Morrissey & Leslie Ash:  'Look what I've found NEIL', 'That's amazing value LESLIE' etc).  In the back of my mind is that it all started with a couple of Archers actors (Dan and Doris IIRC) who appeared, in character, at a Conservative Party conference, but Mr Google has failed to confirm this for me.
I just happened upon an Ade Edmondson ad for Natwest just now, where he's clearly playing Vyvyan but is never referenced as such. I just wanted to post this because I'd never heard of it before (there's a Ronnie Barker ad for watches on the video just before it, too) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEuEman9cUw - Ade's bit starts at about 2:30.

EDIT: It's got a Cinzano Bianco ad with Joan Collins, Leonard Rossiter and a young Marina Sirtis after that, too. This is a fun video.

Quote from: Glebe on August 30, 2020, 08:11:11 PMOn a side note, Gavin Richards, who played Joe Maplins right-hand man Harold Fox, also played Captain Bertorelli in 'Allo 'Allo!. I always remember 'The Graven Image', one of the two episodes Harold Fox appears in (the other being 'Spaghetti Galore') from childhood from the rather juvenile moment where a hastily-painted statue of Joe Maplin appears to have a runny nose.

There is actually one other episode he also appears in, 'Ted At The Helm', where Ted goes to Maplins Head Office in London and meets him there.

I can't imagine being hitched to Su Polard. She strikes as being the sort of actor/personality who is 'always on' very much in the same mould as Gyles Brandreth. I am sorely tempted to splash out on her other half's memoirs now in the hope of a rip roaring  tell all.

Will report back if I indeed do.

In the mid-90s (I think I was about 12) I went to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and some of the cast of the Bournemouth pier summer spectacular were having a day out there as well. Les Dennis, Amanda Holden (Pre-fame. I think this was the show where they met), Vicki Michelle, Steve Johnson off CITV's Motormouth as well as a few others I've forgotten. All the names. All of them were in dark glasses, Johnson was in some sort of tatty trench coat, just a few celebs on a day out, trying to keep themselves to themselves.

Problem is, they'd also brought Su Pollard.

Su was bedecked in bright red sequinned hot pants and matching baseball cap and tinted glasses. She'd regularly break away from the rest of the group and start mingling in with the rest of the public, speaking loudly to herself in order to be noticed. "Oh, I wonder where the loos are?" she'd bellow. At no point did her voice go below "raised". She'd greet people with a very enthusiastic hello and seemed irked if she only got an hello back. She needed to hear "wow, it's Su Pollard off the telly" as if she needed it to live.

A genuinely exhausting woman.

It wasn't just the BBC was it? I mean it definitely wasn't Arthur Daley in those building society ads, because he was wearing a different hat.

Obligatory mention of the time I interviewed him when he was touring building societies, but definitely not being Arthur Daley. Instead he was being a miserable old git. Which I'm still disappointed about until this day. I loved Minder.

I can now declare that I have completed My Hi De Hi Life by  Peter Keogh. It can only be described as a right rollicking read with almost every page clanging as the names are dropped. The married to Su Pollard bit takes up approx one third of the book and isn't massively eye opening save for a story or two about Su's antics in Oz. He skates over what could have been the juicier bits, most likely out of respect for Ms Pollard. As a couple they seem to have adopted the tactic that the more sensational stories hitting the press could be usurped by them releasing managed versions of even more outrageous tales of their own choosing. Not surprisingly the press don't come out of the book especially well and what struck me was how unending in the pursuit of celebs the press could be (except the Times of course - that's an in joke for the few who may have read the tome).

I read it in one sitting on account of it being a slim volume rather than being un put downable and am going to offer it to any CaBber who wants it on the condition that it gets further passed around in the hope that it becomes the akin to a CaB family Bible. PM me, first come first served.

Next up Hearts and Showers by Su herself.
