I'm guessing someone at the Beeb was a big fan of theirs, because "bloke who was in band for 9 months, after their biggest period of fame, dies" is...not the most newsworthy thing?

No, but the Rollers were very, very big so the news will have nostalgia interest for lots of people in their 50s.  As the band were rubbish and their music could not be of any possible interest to anyone who wasn't a fan at the time, the interest will stop there.
