Goodies star Bill Oddie reveals he has been 'very ill'

The 79-year-old conservationist and birdwatcher used Twitter to tell followers he had been "very ill" with "lithium toxicity".

Ever met Bill Oddie? Ever taken lithium?

Buelligan

Luckily for me, I don't like the taste of batteries.

My friends lived next door to him in Hampstead. Said he was on his way to dementia back then. Turns out it was bipolar, poor sod. Once an institution but reduced to this.

Lovely thread title.

I saw him once in Hampstead. Would have liked to have told him how much I loved 'Bill Oddie's Little Black Bird Book' as a kid, but I've heard he can be a bit 'spiky' so I didn't.

QuoteLithium toxicity is another term for a lithium overdose. It occurs when you take too much lithium, a mood-stabilizing medication used to treat bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. Lithium helps reduce episodes of mania and lowers the risk of suicide in people with these conditions.

But

QuoteLithium toxicity, also known as lithium overdose, is the condition of having too much lithium. Symptoms may include a tremor, increased reflexes, trouble walking, kidney problems, and an altered level of consciousness. Some symptoms may last for a year after levels return to normal.

Blimey, hope he gets well soon, an Oldie but a Goodie.

I hate these thread titles because they make me laugh as an old man is seriously not well.

Ill Deaddie?

Butchers Blind

Surely this thread should be called 'Bill Oddie Hell'.

Madonna has recorded a tribute: "Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, put your hands all over my body."

He's been suffering from depression for many years and 79 is a decent innings in that context. A quick end might be merciful.

I'd opt for recovery and 21 more years of birdwatching, myself.

privatefriend

I remember him being quite 'off' on panel show appearances, a few years ago now.

Ah no. Get well soon mate, we've lost one Goodie as it is (Just watched this recently, actually).

Terminally-Chill Oddie

I used to work with a bloke who swears blind that he saw Oddie absolutely pilled off his tits at a filthy rave in Somerset in the early 2000s.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

Didn't he get binned off Springwatch due to his rather erratic behaviour? Must be all that birdwatching that's done him in.

If you watch any interview with him when the subject is about wildlife or nature in general he comes across as a completely normal chap.  But when those interviews are about The Goodies or comedy, he turns into a right oddball.

Elderly Sumo Prophecy

Sounds like he cares more about sparrows than human beings.

He was binned off for a sequence involving dung beetles mating, where he added a commentary including such phrases as "come on, give it to me big boy".

And yet a few years later it's perfectly fine for Chris Packham to repeatedly mention 'black cock' like a giggling schoolboy without any repercussions.

With the horrible Hill having died in 1992, Kenny Everett three years later and Spike Milligan seven years after that, very few practitioners of the "tee-hee-nicky-nacky-noo" school of comedy are still alive.

That's unfair. Those three were completely different comedians with nothing in common.

ASFTSN

Used to see him stalking about Oxford Street when me and my mates worked in mega-highstreet-music-chains. I never served him personally but apparently he was rrrrrather belligerent.

It's that aspect, coupled with the wanting to remain a child forever (itself the cornerstone of the Goodies' whole approach), that I find unpalatable about all of them, and a lot of their fans.

kalowski

Stay with us, Bill.
QuoteAlan: Can I have a look at that list, I want to get to the bottom of this?  Mr G String. Mr Nick Hers, Y Fronts. Mr T Osser -- that doesn't even  work. Mr B Oddie, this is Bill Oddie. It's not a crank call. Why have you put it on there?

Susan: Well, we thought it looked like "body".

Alan: What's rude about a body?

Sophie: Tits?

A friend of mine was a warden of a reserve that Springwatch was filmed at when Oddie was on it. He said the same, he got on fine with him as they are both bird experts, but he had a freak out when someone mentioned the Funky Gibbon*

*I can't remember the details.

Packham was very pleasant but would fuck off as soon as it was finished whereas the others would socialise. Fair enough though, he wasn't horrible about it.

Oddie is a good (bird's) egg in my eyes, hope he recovers soon.

As I've reported on here before, my sister in law used to work in Oban studying the marine mammal life there, and one year she consulted for Springwatch.  Kate Humble was a right horrible sort apparently, which I know upset quite a few CaBbers at the time.

Did your mate say what Michaela Strachan was like? Or was she not on it then?
