When they were on Celeb Big Brother, he was making fun of her for being stupid all the time.

My memory is the opposite. He got angry at, er, Maggot from that welsh rap band for taking the piss out of her, amongst other things. Preston was defending her.

Agreed.  The aforementioned Gail Porter episode came across as if he'd wanted to shag her but she'd turned him down, so venomous and seemingly-misogynistic were his attacks.  (Not saying that's what had happened, lawyers, but as I said above, that's how it came across.)

It's stuff like that that stopped me watching (one of the Sheila Ferguson eps was the last straw), and I didn't return until the first Amstell series (had I known about the guest host series I would have come back one series earlier).  He was better but could still be quite cunty at times, however I'll forgive him for stuff like "Cigarettes that you can legally buy in shops?!  I'm shocked and appalled!"

And yeah, as it went on, some of the comments about the line-up extras became seriously harsh... all-in-all it ended up being a really nasty, bitter little show, although it did improve quite a lot for the last, Rhod Gilbert hosted, series.


If nothing else, I hope this new version is nicer to people (at the risk of sounding like good ol' wishy-washy Charlie Brown!).

Yes the Gail Porter one was a classic rejected-man-taking-his-revenge-on-all-young-women-by-being-vile-to-the-one-in-front-of-him. I'm glad he's gone into semi-retirement as, even in his Shooting Stars days, he seemed utterly toxic. Has someone already mentioned the story of him kicking Rhys Thomas in the chest for going out with a young woman who had already, surprise surprise, rejected (longtime virgin)Mark.

I'd forgotten the line-ups round! That was even worse. Just moronic bullying of ordinary people. They literally only had their appearances to remark upon. Imagine it, overweight people, teehee, old people, haha, women, lolol. Big brave (longtime virgin)Mark Lamarr took that opportunity with gusto, for 14 long years. It wasn't funny in the first season.

Greg Davies apparently confirmed, although reading carefully it appears that -- as was mentioned upthread -- he just filmed the pilot.  Presumably is carrying on for the series, though, but not overtly confirmed.

Btw, turns out I misremembered above: the guest presenter series was AFTER Simon Amstell, not before.  So I must have turned off for a second time during his reign, 'cos I definitely missed the guest presenter series.

Oh they did, they did.

Although none of them looked quite so crushed as Clive from Dr and the Medics, who didn't get picked out of his own line-up.  It was so obviously him, too.  His slow, sad, trudge offstage will stay with me forever.

The Preston incident did make me feel uncomfortable at the time, although I felt more sorry for Houghton who wasn't there to defend herself and\or take it in (sincere or fake) good humour. She later said Preston had let her know the marriage was a publicity grab on their wedding day, so I ended I feeling quite sorry for her all the ways round.

It was generally a decent watch whenever I saw it, but that we're discussing whether Lamarr or Amstell was meaner and what moments went too far rather than recounting our comedic highlights probably speaks to how ephemeral it was.

Ugly mainly has 'ordinary' looking people, some are a bit ugly, and some are quite the opposite. My uncle - not ugly - was on their books way back in the 70s, and did a photo love story for FAB 208 amongst other things. And one of my exes was - and I just checked - still is on their books.

To me, the biggest insult Amstell hit Preston with was before the show even started. - he introduced him as "Ordinary Boys frontman & professional celebrity" before claiming his band only had 2 fans.

...neither of whom existed. My favourite put-down was after the walk-off; Amstell- "Oh no- we can't lose Preston!"
