Yes, loving Genesis. Wasn't that enamoured with Gore, but as this stage of their career I'm happy for a few good songs per album. Likeing the production much more than the last couple of albums.

Not sure CaB is really a massive Deftones hotspot.

I dunno, they're one of those bands that kinda defy categorisation to a degree, so you can never really tell who's going to be a fan.  I quite like them, but they've never really clicked with me in a big way.  I'll be giving this a stream or two for sure.

Fuckin' is if I've got owt to say about it. They're one of my most beloved bands, been a fan ever since first hearing them aged 14 when White Pony came out and, if anything, my love for them has only gotten stronger as the years have gone by, whereas my teenage adulation for other stuff I was into back then has either fallen by the wayside or whittled itself down to a choice couple of albums.

Gore aside, I don't think they've ever done a bad album (and Gore wasn't a bad album) and I'm so pleased that they managed to shake off the cumbersome and erroneous nu-metal label they got tarred with around the turn of the millennium and continuing to blossom naturally and with impeccable consistency. A band with crushing riffs and ethereal grooves, like a hard rock Depeche Mode. They've always sounded like that, though, even amongst the scuzzy hardcore punk and rap-tinged styles on Adrenaline - which is one of my all-time favourite albums - there is an otherworldly drunken romantic sway that compliments the knife-edge intensity perfectly.

I FUCKING LOVE DEFTONES.

Forgot this new stuff was coming out actually. In the middle of some 10-minute proggy doom thing now and got friends coming over shortly but will come back when I've had a listen.

I’ve loved them since my teens, and was really into them for a long time. Seen them live a bunch of times, sometimes shambolic and awful, sometimes really good. Steadily find myself less interested in their new releases though, probably since saturday night wrist, though i did enjoy diamond eyes. Something about them just feels played out to me now bar the odd track. I can barely remember anything off gore/koi. Not sure if it’s just me having had enough of deftones. These new tracks sound alright genesis a little more interesting, not sure i like the production actually as vocals sound a bit dry and too clean, the shouty bits don’t sound right.

I realised i have very little idea how their albums have been received, Everyone loves white pony obviously (rinsed the first 3 records endlessly as a teen), but the one I keep going back to now is the self titled.

Genesis might have surpassed Minerva as my new favourite Deftones song. Almost. It's immense.

Ah fucking HELL it's really good though isn't it?!

IT'S REALLY GOOD

Right, proper headphone listen tomorrow to decide whether I dig it or not.

This album is absolutely brilliant. Can tell every band member was fully engaged with making this. Don't want to rank it in relation to their already great discography after just three listens but I love it.

Leaked.

It's out at midnight so it doesn't really matter.

So yeah, this album is good. Certainly better than Gore, much more cohesive and focused.

That's about the extent of musical criticism skills.

I'm still finding it a little dull. Too similar to Gore.

It didn't grab my attention much at all on first listen. Need to find the time to give it another spin with more focus over the weekend.

Fuck it, just listened to it again.

Mate, where are the lofty heights of the title track across the rest of the album? It's like they dropped that track as a teaser and then stuck it at the end of the track list to make people listen through to reach the other side.

This is certainly a "good" album - it's strong, consistent and it sounds magnificent - but I think I've sorta reached my peak expectation and hype for Deftones now. Unless they radically switch up their style somehow following on from this, I don't think I can get too excited about them chugging out their particular brand of ethereal heaviness any more. I could very contentedly listen to this if I was in a Deftones kinda mood but I don't see that I would ever choose to stick this one on over any of their previous albums, you know?

Probably a 7/10 from me. I'm glad it exists and they're still making people very happy but I'm not massively arsed about it.

They’ve always been one of those bands that I’ve never really given enough time to, when I know I should.

I remember when White Pony came out and I was balls deep into my metal/heavy stuff/reading Kerrang stage and even then it didn’t really capture me. That record’s now considered a classic isn’t it?

I think Chino’s vocals were the element that never really clicked with me.

Where’s best to start then? From the debut and then chronologically onwards, I suppose.

Sorry, I know I haven’t really contributed to this thread and there’s nothing worse than some cunt piping up about how they don’t like a band in a thread that’s been created to discuss why people like a band but with Deftones the elements are all there on a plate for me and I’ve never quite got it. And I want to get it.

Well if you don't like White Pony or Chino's 'singing' then you probably won't be into much of the rest. I suppose give Around The Fur, WP or Diamond Eyes a go.

I can't get enough of this album. After Genesis - I think it's a pretty good song but it's the most Deftones-by-numbers track on here - I think the album's full of highlights. Ceremony's great; it basically has a different chorus in the first half and the second half, both of which I love, and the bridge is beautifully done. Urantia threw me off the first time I heard it but once I got used to the way it settles down and uses that thrash riff as a texture (in a way that I've never heard any band do before) I loved it. Error's so bouncy and cool and then develops into a heavy version of Cocteau Twins-like bliss the second half of the song. The Spell Of Mathematics, Pompeji - I better stop myself before I mention every single song.

Yeah White Pony's a classic.

I really like Adrenaline but it's not a good intro point; the production's very dated and raw and really doesn't capture them well sonically. I agree with Al - Around The Fur, White Pony and Diamond Eyes are probably the best albums to try and get into them. Possibly even Ohms because all their different elements really come together on it, but definitely the three mentioned.
