I don't know the song, but you could look at the A-listed (and B,C) tracks from 6music of a year ago (and various dates).

Thanks RS, I'll have a trawl through that this evening

Now there's an idea - hope this works, I've never used Vocaroo before and I've got the computer skills of a donkey, but this is the flute bit in between verses:

Some beautiful whistling there. If I'd ever heard that song before I'd definitely be able to tell you what it was.

Some of the description sounds a bit like Keep the Change by Mattiel - no flute though, but it does a recurring sort of glockenspiel bit.

Why thank you, non capisco

Cheers Clatty, but that's not the one.  It's a lot more primal than that.

I've spent a while clicking through the links on the Wayback Machine Renegade Screw linked to, but no luck - the problem is, I don't know the title or artist name I'm supposed to be looking for.

Ah, the hell with it, Match Of The Day time...

You were nearly there with Goat Girl but it's just Goat - Let It Burn:

Wow good job! Absolutely top tune as well!

I didn't actually know the song myself but was aware of the band and their general sound so from xxxx xxx x xxx' s description and misremembered band name I thought it could be them. Had a listen on TIDAL and  it's the first song on their most popular list.

Yep, it's a banger alright. They're on my vague list of bands I need to properly listen to when I can get round to it so will definitely be doing that when I can get round to it. Cheers xxxx xxx x xxx!

Naah, nothing like it

Yep, that's the fella!  Thanks a millionGeoffs-Cape and everyone else for suggestions.

No wonder I couldn't find it on the 6Music playlist thing, I was searching under 2019 and 2020 and the track's from 2018.  I'd never have thought it was that long ago.  I'll be checking their Bandcamp page later, they're right up my street if Let It Burn's anything to go by.

Nice tune. I went to see that band GOAT about 5 years ago, after seeing they were playing and checking out a few tunes (none as good as that).  They are Swedish.

But there is actually a Japanese robotic band called GOAT and it ended up being them I went to see.  They were amazing live!

They are Swedish.

Also, they're not an all girl band (although they all wear masks, so who truly knows?).

I bought World Music when it came out but apart from for a couple of key tracks, they didn't really click with me until I saw them live. I think it's because I find the production a bit anaemic, which is a shame because it doesn't reflect the intensity of their live shows. Compare:

And another Japanese band called Goat, which I've not got round to investigating properly yet:

Yes, those are the guys I seen.  Just looking it up and it was in 2016.  I took a mate along who would've found the Swedish Goat weird enough, and it ended up being an hour of kinda funky minimalist jazz!

That's quite funny you say that about the Swedish Goat and their album/live show.  Their Japanese namesake suffer from a similar problem, at least based on the album I bought at the gig.

Ah, I thought you meant literally robotic, like Z-Machines (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MluikyEQF4) :-D
