It's difficult to deny this now.  I keep reading that the GOP can now 'purge the Trumpists'.

You surely have to ask the question 'why would they purge the Trumpists'?

Let's be honest here - without COVID, it looks like Trump would've won this comfortably.  70m Americans are happy to reinstall this man - I'm in no doubt you could've added another 5m without his handling of the pandemic.

He's spent four years in office calling for a police state, talking about being president forever, cuddling up to dictators, governing with a real sense of spite, coming out with racist bullshit on an almost daily basis.  The folks lapping this up aren't being hoodwinked, nor are they likely to all keel over tomorrow.  He's clearly their mouthpiece.  The 'Trumpists' aren't a handful of lunatics at the head of the party; it's the GOP electorate.  No GOP presidential candidate has ever take this many votes.

As repulsive as most of us find the man, it might be a time to take a good, hard look at the American people.  Given the constant comparisons and references to Nazi Germany, I'd offer another; this is similar to the number of Germans who, post-war, claimed to be in the thrall of Hitler.  Somehow they didn't vote for him; if they did, they didn't realise he was serious; and after that, their lives got better so they didn't worry about the Jewish family down the round; yes, of course they joined the Hitler Youth/BDM/SS/SA, but so did everyone else, and besides it was more like a social club/scouts.  Pretending that this can all be fixed by removing Trump appointees is why we're in this place at the moment.  This is going to take a generation or so to correct, if it is to be corrected at all.

Jeb Bush is hugely responsible for Trump, you'd have to think. He got to ride ALLLLLLLLL of the lingering negativity regarding 2008 by opposing both the the previous 28 years of presidencies quite directly. Then the Bush's got all pally with the establishment dems just to reinforce the notion that the guy in office with everything on his side was still the anti establishment candidate.

Shitholes in middle america were only really starting to recover at all from 2008 around 2016, of course they'd attribute whatever good came along afterwards to him in that context.
