I hesitate to serve this up among so many classics, but here's one of mine from this year. It's a deep/jazzy number with live bass, sax etc so if that sounds like your bag, I'd appreciate a listen. I had MAW, Kerri Chandler, mid to late 90s NYC type stuff in mind when I made it.

That's good, super smooth and reminded me of that early 2000's Body & Soul Joe Claussell/Francois Kervorkian sound. The live instruments are beautifully recorded and I really liked the processing on the timbales?!? Is nice and spacey.

Thanks, that means a lot. I basically tried to make something that would fit into one of my 90s (bedroom) DJ sets alongside those kinds of producers. I can't take too much credit for the bass, sax and rythym guitar as they were all done remotely by session musicians on Fiverr. That site's a bit of a game changer for me as it's always been my dream to have access to session musicians. There are 3 countries involved in that track!

That's very interesting. What do you provide them with - a guide/demo/MIDI track, written music, or just instruct them to improvise along in any way they feel?

For that one I had the drums and keys to start with. Sent it to the bassist with a few examples on YouTube of the kind of thing I was looking for but said just have a crack and see how you get on. Went back and forth a couple of times to say "a bit more like this" etc. Then had the guitarist do the same, followed by the sax, then spent ages rearranging stuff, adding bits of percussion, synth layers etc. The rhythm guitar was supposed to be a more integral part of it but it was badly recorded so ended up getting someone else to play it, but it was a bit much so tacked it onto the end. On other tracks I've written my own bassline but not happy with it so just asked for something similar but more varied etc just had a look and the whole lot set me back £80. The real pros on there charge upwards of a hundred for a short phrase or whatever, but there are plenty of new starters on there who charge a lot less to get their profile up.

There was a great, strange tune that came out on the same label as Deep Choice that I just remembered

New Latin Age - Long Wave

The Italians made some excellent deep house in the early 90s

Thanks, I really like that, despite me and that tinny trumpet sound not seeing eye to eye

I know exactly the bit you mean, it all sounds like it was made using presets on a cheap FM synth. It's worth diving through the YouTube recommendations for more.

This one still sounds good.

Onirico - Stolen Moments

This has been getting a hammering on Friday night Radio 1, and so it should. It's got the vibe of a mid-90s Hooj Choons track with a modern production. Lovely stuff.

Excellent Kenny Dope interview with Armand Van Helden and A-Trak just gone up here if you're a New York house fan.

Non Stop Dancer

Yeah that's a great watch. I love how obviously in awe AVH is of Kenny!

Totally, he was being a massive fanboy - Kenny is the don though, couldn't take my eye off his wall of records either.

I'd love to watch a show where these old heads get in a room with some limited old equipment and make beats like KD was saying he'd want to do with Todd Terry.

Which reminds me I've being meaning to point out how good Sweely's Home Grooves jams are on YouTube.

Classic slice of house from godfather of UK Garage, Todd Edwards. Like this type of house, it's very busy.

That's great, not heard it before but it's exactly the kind of thing I'd have on in the car. Might track down that GU if it's going cheap, I'm a fan of Nick Warren as a DJ and half of Way Out West, who I nearly mentioned in my last post. They released a new album 3 years ago and I played it many times.

Some more recent tunes:

Dusky - Skin Deep (Global Communication Remix)

Way Out West - Running Away feat. Eli & Fur
Way Out West - Slam

Dosem - Extraction

And a classic

Harry ''Choo Choo'' Romero - Night @ The Black (Main Mix)

All excellent choices. I think you and I have very similar tastes. I've always been a big fan of Nick Warren and Way Out West. I had the pleasure of hearing the man DJ at Cream once, that was great.

Lovers of piano house should be very happy with the Bruise remix of Collage by Lady Blackbird. Two short piano lines, a really great vocal: pretty much perfection. It gives me spine shivers and I've never even heard it out.

The vocal is pitched up quite a bit from the original which is excellent in its own right. All of her stuff is well worth a listen.

Pingers

What's going on here then? Some wags have started adding doses of 80s pop into house tunes and.... it actually sounds really good!

Sensational by Anti Up has all sorts going on, loads of great sounds. It's a bit like the kitchen sink approach of an 80s 12" single, I really like it.

Even better is My House by Jodie Harsh which seems to have nicked the bassline of Venus by Bananarama and is loads of joyous fun.

I want to go bloody clubbing!

I hadn't heard Vapour Trails for ages, it's great - thanks for that

This one's from last year but sounds just like a French filter-house track from 20 years ago. Hadn't heard it before it was mentioned in a Radio 1 article today:

On the subject of piano-led house, when I started the thread I had in mind Camelphat's dub of MK's 17. A perfect example of how, in the right hands, 3 piano notes can make an absolute belter of a tune. It's a hell of a build-up.

Likewise

phes

Right then. I bought myself a pair of Vestax PDX2000s and Serato Pro, so I have been immersed in resurrecting old skills and starting to build a collection. So hopefully I'll be able to add to this thread a little more in future.
