Congratulations PPE! What a great win. I was feeling very tense as it went into the final round as the other guys had dominated it in their semi-final, but I shouldn't have worried!

I wonder if Victoria Coren Mitchell bringing attention to the guy on the other team sounding like Richard Ayoade threw him off at all? She could have also mentioned the other one looked like Technical Boy from the American Gods TV show.

Why? They seemed alright. It's not like it was Emma Kennedy and the Centrists.

Yeah agreed, most of the teams this year actually seemed really nice!

I don't *think* it did, as he took it well and said at some point during the week on twitter that people have been saying it to him for years. Plus he did really well in that episode!

I follow a socialist economist called Christine Berry on twitter and last night she tweeted....

Hah, I did not know she was either a socialist or an economist, just knew her as my friend's sister in law.

Just watched this, well done! I had such a hatred of the opposition, especially the married couple, so it was doubly nice to see you beat them.

Oh no! They were really lovely and I think pretty left wing (after our first round I definitely found myself trying to figure out everyone's politics) :-D I really liked almost everyone I met to be honest.

He was doing well until that point, and then I don't remember him even saying anything after!

Yeah, I saw her speak at a Momentum thing in Manchester. She's written a book too!

Only Connect's placement just before University Challenge does an excellent job of showing the contestants to be nice people. I don't know if it's that they genuinely are arseholes, they're socially awkward or I'm just a huge inverted snob hating on the smart posh lads, but I would say every week on University Challenge there are at least two or three contestants that seem like massive twats.

Only Connect used to have some utter specimens - the pube-haired doctor with the Naruto headband being a particular standout - but in the past couple of years they seem to have exhausted the UK's supply of insufferables and now mostly get bog standard nerds on.

Also my mum says to say "good job" on your hair. She appreciates a nice shiny do.

Last night's Wurzels question, Victoria ranting about how it was 'impossible' and 'un-gettable'. It was a piece of piss once the combine harvester popped up, what else was it gonna be? It was one of the only two I got that episode in fact (the other being the space shuttle one).

jobotic

I didn't get it. Were the first two clues to do with the lyrics? Who knows what the lyrics are apart that one line?

I probably would have guessed key, but in a "comedy" answer way.

Ray Travez

I think the question setters are trying a bit too hard to be funny or wacky or something.

Yeah, the instant the combine harvester appeared, that was it. There's only one specific reference to combine harvesters I know (as opposed to just general things they do, like... combine harvests), and it's from the Wurzels song. A gimme.

Only time I've ever got a music question on the first clue too (though this was a rare example of a Round 2 music question) -

The measurements of area quoted in the lyrics: '20 acres' and '43 (acres)'.

I don't see a thread for this series of University Challenge and I can't be arsed starting one but last night's was a significant episode, worth a watch for UC enthusiasts.

there hasn't been more about it in the (online) papers. Google variants of 'University Challenge lowest score' and most of the returns are about Exeter's 15 in 2009 or the New Hall, Cambridge 35 in 1998 (but they were an all-female team so fair play, let's take the piss eh lads!)

I generally like VCM, but that rant was just weird. Was she being sarcastic?

amateur

One of the walls was completed exceptionally quickly, so presume they had to leave in a lot of the padding VCM puts in, asking the contestants questions after each answer etc.

You can always tell when there's loads of chat in the first half at the programme that you're staring down the barrel of a short wall or two.

JesusAndYourBush

Forgot to mention it at the time, but a few weeks ago VCM's hair was different and I found it really distracting!

Think it was a "thing" to get us all chatting. Don't think it worked.

I like VCM (which is amazing, considering her brother) but she has no comic timing at all. She read out a pretend letter a few weeks ago about someone requesting a best of which I thought could have been quite funny but she made a right pigs ear of it.

Why, was one of the challenges to change your hairstyle for a week?

dissolute ocelot

I have been watching VCM's fashion choices with bemusement this season. Considering they're probably recorded 2 or 3 per day over a couple of weeks, it must involve a lot of time in the costume department. William G Stewart never had this problem.

I thought that was a possibility too. No one mentioning she had something written on her cheek this week?!

Norton Canes

She tweeted the other day saying nothing she wears on OC is anything to do with Taskmaster and would everyone please stop talking about it... so.

I'm kind of surprised that aborted attempt to make everyone sing Duran Duran made the final cut, even if they need such padding to chop for designated episode length. Was that really the best they could get out of them? She's normally better at geeing up the reluctant introverts.

amateur

My Only Connect policy is, and will always remain:

- fast forward to VCM saying "on my right" to skip the opening joke
- mute whenever I get an inkling that someone might be about to sing
- stop watching before the end joke

If I didn't follow the above I would cringe myself inside out on a weekly basis. Simply not a show I can risk watching live.

Great quiz but the banter is far too jemble to be tolerated.

Norton Canes

Uncanny.

Each week we play a little game at the start of Only Connect. We let the theme music play then as soon as the music ends we hit mute. Then, whoever has the remote has to use their skill and judgement (lipreading, checking body language) to try and unmute at exactly the moment VC-M says "On my right..."

Lots of practise means we usually get it spot on.

Quote from: Norton Canes on October 15, 2020, 02:21:46 PM
Oh and we mute the end monologue too.

And whenever she asks the contestants to sing.

amateur

Great minds and extremely clever business.

I wonder how the show would work with a live audience. I feel that her "gags" are more like odd non-sequiturs were not supposed to laugh out loud at.

dissolute ocelot

Apparently they've been having serious trouble getting contestants, but there must be a very small number of people who both know the answers and want to sing Duran Duran on TV. It's a horrible attempt at being quirky, which ignores the fact that all the best TV quizzes have a host who just asks the questions. You wouldn't get Paxman painting esoteric symbols on his face and holding a singalong after the University Challenge music round.
