Are there any recent figures on how many people are actually observing the lockdown rules? I've found estimates for the number of people isolating if told "you're plaguey" but no clue how many might be illegally socialising every Friday night.

There's some self-report data out there:
https://gov.wales/survey-public-views-coronavirus-covid-19-6-9-november-2020

off the top of my head.
Thanks. It's going to be hard to get much in the way of accurate information. It's interesting watching the trends, even if I'm a bit skeptical that people are being honest.

Judging by the number of cars on the A34 every fucker in Manchester has an "essential" job.

Dr Rock

I have to go the the chemist every morning to get my pain meds (I can't get a weeks worth cos I eat them all at once like smarties) and during the first lockdown the roads were empty and it was easy to park outside the chemist. Less so this time.

Haven't been to Tesco but during lockdown 1 when I looked it up on Google Maps to see how busy it was, it was always less busy than usual for the time of day. Now, it's always pretty much exactly as busy as usual.

Yeah.

Stuff like the Google and Apple Mobility reports are interesting, but obviously not very specific.

Yep it's probably partly because the schools and colleges are still open and partly because a lot of other jobs/businesses that closed or worked from home full time during the first one haven't this time. I and everyone else in my department (local authority libraries) wfh from March - August but we're nearly all back at work in some capacity now, even if it's just a few days a week.

jobotic

it would appear that round here essential shops include

Pubs owned by a local Tory donor
Vape shops
Florists
Jewellers

All supposedly click and collect but you can go in and stand around chatting while you wait

Meanwhile cases locally have gone through the roof.

Mind you, it's all irrelevant while schools are still open.

Snappy Snaps have opened up a new store here during the lockdown.

How the fuck are they even still in business, even without Covid? I'd have thought they should have gone the way of Blockbuster years ago.

Pranet

I wondered the same thing. Apparently they do ironing now.

All these places like Snappy Snaps seem to work on the basis of anything you can name they'll stick a photo on it: cushions, calendars, mugs, water bottles, face masks, jigsaws, photo books, t-shirts, hats, underpants, advent calendars, phone cases, fridge magnets, oven gloves, aprons, blankets, pillow cases, bags of all sizes, wooden blocks, metal sheets, canvases, posters, cakes, chopping boards, hot water bottles, probably tattoo it on your dog.

EDIT: Actually the prize for diversification probably goes to Jessops which owns a zoo where you can go and take pictures of the animals.

Looks like the lockdown is ending on December 2nd rather than being extended: https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/christmas-shopping-saved-all-shops-23049613

Although I expect we will lock down again in January. I just hope that people don't all rush to do their Christmas shopping and cause another spike.

Can't see that happening to be honest, most people have more sense than that.

I can't work out if that's genuinely meant or incredibly sarcastic. Either way I think it will be insanity, the week leading up to the lockdown was, a disturbing amount of people don't give a fuck about social distancing any more, and I think the shops will be packed with panicky buyers desperately trying to get hold of last minute bargains.

olliebean

Most people probably do have more sense than that. Unfortunately enough people don't, and a lot of the people who do will have family members who don't, and thus we will get another spike. Especially with people doing last-minute Christmas shopping and then going to visit family members over Christmas before they've had time to start showing symptoms. And all because Boris Johnson wants to feel like he saved Christmas. I bet we get a publicity shot of him dressed up as Santa at some point.

Gave gran covid, dead within two weeks but i got the harry potter boxed set for 19.99, bargain!

Fambo Number Mive

Are they having in person pantos again? Seems very risky. The National Lottery "fingers crossed" sign feels apt for a different reason next to the offer.

THANK YOU FOR SAVING CHRISTMAS BORIS CAN I LICK YOUR ANUS BORIS I DRAWED YOU A PICTURE BORIS LEGEND

Fambo Number Mive

No doubt the Sun will blame the same public it is encouraging to go to pantos and telling them that Johnson has saved Christmas when we see a third spike in a couple of weeks' time.

Another day in a normal country where half the papers have a picture of the royal family's dead dog

To be fair looks like a lovely boy. But not the point. Also the TPA-Led drain the swamp shit in the mail

You didn't know I worked for The Sun do you?

I've never felt so depressed by being right.

Just thought I'd drop in to let kittens know that M Macron's just announced that my main job will remain on furlough until 20 January (at the earliest).  Maybe I've got that wrong but I don't think so.

Thank you for your powerful wishing and manifesting, hugely appreciated.

QuoteMacron announced that some measures will be lifted from Saturday, November 28th, while others will be lifted on December 15th - if certain health conditions are met.

From Saturday 'non essential' shops can reopen, until 9pm and under strict health conditions
The 1km rule is to be scrapped for exercise, instead people will be allowed to exercise for up to three hours a day, and go up to 20km from their homes.
Extra-curricular activities at schools can restart, but only outside
However the lockdown will continue, people must continue to work from home if they can and trips outside the home can only be made for essential reasons. An attestation will still be needed for every trip outside.

The next stage is from December 15th, and this will only happen if health targets are met. These include having fewer than 3,000 Covid-19 patients in intensive care.

If these targets are met

Lockdown will end and attestations will no longer be required. Travel between regions and meeting family and friends will be allowed
A 9pm to 7am curfew will apply to the whole country
The curfew will be lifted between December 24th and 31st
Extra-curricular school activities can restart indoors.
Cinemas, theatres and museums can reopen, with strict health controls in place
The next phase begins on January 20th, and again depends on certain health targets being met.

It involves

The reopening of bars, restaurants and cafés, as well as gyms and leisure centres

Restarting of full-time in-person teaching in lycées, and then 15 days later in universities. At present both lycées and universities are doing a mixture of online and in-person teaching, while universities are limited to 50 percent capacity in lecture halls.

The announcement comes against the background of some positive health news, which appears to show that the country's second lockdown of 2020 is having the desired effect.
