Please, no! Please!

(I'm talking about the Remembrance Sunday Doorstep Silence, not the Victoria Wood Illness Secrecy. Or the Andy Burnham Looking Like Your Dad Lockdown Fury)

I didn't know she had kids. Shows how good she was at keeping secrets.

Tom Moore's agent (daughter) is fuming they used some proper war chump instead of the Nation's Gramp in that photo. "After all he's fucking done...cancel The Mirror, socialist rag!!"

Inspector Norse

How apt that the picture resembles nothing more than a desert fort flooding with lakes of heathen blood

Captain Z

Ve haf vays of making you remember.

I'm surprised it's the Daily Mirror doing this. It feels like more of an Express or Star move. I wonder what kind of traction this will get. Won't it look a bit odd, everyone just standing on their doorsteps like they've forgotten their keys?

It'll probably be cold, so I won't bother, thanks. Sorry Don, request denied.

And actually, fuck all this. I can remember the fallen just fine from inside my house, why does it need to be a fucking performance?

olliebean

Honour the fallen by standing on your doorstep silently judging those of your neighbours who aren't standing on theirs. It's the British way.

Standing on your doorstep pretending to give a fuck is a lot easier than actually giving a fuck, in much the same way as laying a wreath once a year is a lot easier than working towards a world where young people don't die for the greed of their governments.

Why does everything have to be so performative these days? Why do people feel they have to display their emotions to strangers in order for their thoughts to have meaning? Clapping on doorsteps, silences on doorsteps, seemingly endless communal kneeling before football games. This country has become a bit weird.

Silent is good. Unless little Jimmy next door attempts the last post on his Cornet.

Mentioned this to my Mum this morning, and she remembers that she and her sister were required to do this as Girl Guides back in the 50s. Her mother, my Nan, hated Remembrance Day (which I never knew until about 30 minutes ago).
