Aunty Donna's Big Ol' House of Fun

Don't know if anyone here's familiar with them. They're an Australian sketch group who do absurd YouTube sketches (here's a good recent one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJk8UevZbIs), an improv podcast, live shows etc. Really funny nice group of boys with a brand of humour I love. Last month completely by surprise Netflix released a trailer for a show of theirs, which is crazy, so happy for them that they've had such a break.

It came out today, just watched the first episode and it's so surreal seeing them in this slick production with big American comedy actors but it was really funny and tightly directed. Feels like such a relief that mainstream audiences will be seeing them in such a great light.

Saw the advert unbidden on Netflix and wanted to kill myself.

They've been really big in the Melbourne Comedy scene, have been doing a podcast for a bit and have lots of love from good comedy people, it's interesting to see they've got a Netflix series (with US people, to help sell it obvs) off the back of all that (and their Youtube work as well)

Watching the first episode there were at least three spots where I inwardly groaned "oh shit, they're not really doing this, are they?", only for them to take a fairly worn out idea (the list of wacky possible flatmates, the game show that goes wrong, etc) and manage to get decent laughs out of it. Can't say abrupt tonal changes are my favourite style of comedy either but overall it wasn't utter shit, which makes it the best Australian sitcom this decade.

They've done something a bit different. I find them funny. But this does seem a bit 'Flight of the Conchords'

The trailer is awful but the show itself is really fun. Like 13 Schoolyards said, there's a good few sketches which have an abrupt change of tone, but I thought it worked really effectively and it's the best of the most recent glut of Netflix sketch shows for me.

Most episodes of their podcast have at least one thing that makes me cry laughing, it's so fun

Really enjoy these lads in bursts - and there are good laughs in each show - but I watched three episodes in a row and felt like my brain was melting by the end. Not sure I'm man enough to continue.

I'd echo Famous Mortimer's recommendation there, I loved that show and always felt it was a huge shame it was a one season wonder.

Two episodes in. Inevitably patchy but definitely enjoying it.

Lots to enjoy. Feels very much of it's type, in terms of emotional flip flops and dry ironic interpretations of tropes, but loads of ideas, trying hard, fun bits.

Easy to watch 20 minutes of it anyway, thanks to the utter pace of it.

Trailer didn't look amazing, but are you familiar with Aunty Donna? Definitely worth checking out their stuff on YouTube, they've got some brilliantly silly bollocks.

The 'Ellen' sketch from their live show is a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5FGOaz__W0

The only problem I have with the Netflix series is that episodes flow into each other too easily and it's all over too soon.

Very.

The school series is the strongest of the YouTube stuff.

Blimey, Ed Helms is in the second episode and he's not shit and I don't want to murder him. This is an all new world we're living in, and one I find quite terrifying.

Yeah, I normally can't stand him but he seemed very game and fitted in quite well.

Instinctively thought I'd hate this - turns out I couldn't have been more wrong. Now to make my way through their YouTube.

I checked out a few of the YT sketches which I really liked, and some of the podcast. Then watched some of the Netflix thing and my impression is it's slightly more uptight and they felt the pressure of making it 'proper' but I still like it. Feels like a good time to have something so silly to watch.

Just a note to say that if you watch it on netflix, autoplay cuts off the end credits which is a bit of a shame as they have episode specific lyrics. All the one I watched last night did, anyway.

This is the first thing in ages that legitimately made me cry laughing. Rarely see surreal/absurdist stuff that actually resolves into hilarious jokes. The one who looks a bit like Nicholas Cage is fukn out there.
