Little - Remenbered Comedy Shows
« on: November 19, 2020, 08:03:26 AM »
One of those threads, inspired by the " comedy shows you only remember one fucking line from" thread, as I think it might expand into that, anyways. Best head that off at the pass.

To start: " Snakes And Ladders", dystopian future Thatcher - bashing sitcom starring John Gordon Sinclair and Adrian Edmonson. How many of the boys and girls of CaB remember that 'un, fondly or otherwise?

I had episode 1 of that on a tape (hey kids!) with loads of other stuff from that era that I watched regularly (Absolutely perhaps?).
Don't recall much about it as I only really saw it in fast forward, but there was a HILARIOUS names mix up between the 2 main characters which seemed to be the entire plot.

Small Potatoes (Tommy Tiernan works in a video shop), According to Bex (poorly-recieved Jessica Hynes vehicle), The Fitz (Irish stereotypes abused to the point of a sort of rabid ecstasy). How about The Persuasionists?

Do yousins remember Sean's Show, the UK adaptation of Its Garry Shandling's Show?

John Gordon Sinclair has little remembered sitcoms falling out of his arse, doesn't he? 'An Actor's Life For Me', 'Nelson's Column', 'Mad About Alice'. He loved a one series underwhelming BBC sitcom more than any other living actor.

Depends whether you mean little-remembered on here or in general life. I have yet to meet anyone who remembers Kit Curran but I am sure it is remembered on here.

Hee! That's a very good point! I remember " AALFM" very fondly, JGS was great as a hapless, klutzy aspiring actor getting himself into all sorts of scrapes due to all kinds of misunderstandings that only ever happen in fucking sitcoms. I remember feeling quite saddened in the final episode of what was to be the only series, when Gina McKee The Girlfriend packed a suitcase for him and kicked him out of their flat, cos she was fed up of him being such a useless cunt. Quite a moving moment, really. As we all know, JGS also appeared in the first series of " Hot Metal" as a foil to Geoffrey Player's put- upon office-in-the- lift character. He also , much later, went on to do a bit of that transitioning that the feller who wrote stuff like a rabbit looking like Harvey Keitel in " Father Ted" is not a big fan of, and landed the plum role of the kooky, lovable parents- killing psychopath Alice Morgan in top ludicrous hokum " everyone getting murdered in London" series " Luther".

Also, it's a safe bet that DrGreggles has fond memories of " Sticky Moments" with Julian Clary.

Yeah, it would be. Catchy theme tune. A young dark- haired Denis Lawson and equally as young Lindsey Duncan. That feller who played Mark Corrigan's dad looking the same age as he's always done, and that Roy Kinnear surrogate feller with the lazy eye. Didn't Andy Hamilton or someone like that write it?

I definitely would have watched some episodes at the time, but no real memories of it.
Pure filth, no doubt.

Is Chance In a Million little remembered, was little watched, or the exact opposite? I imagine on here lots are familiar with it but I hardly ever see it mentioned.

I remember it being very funny but I was quite young. I watched half an episode a couple of years ago and laughed a fair bit.

Chance In a Million was terrific.
Picked up all 3 series on DVD for next to nothing a couple of years ago.

Yes, Simon Callow gives a top notch comedy performance, and the young Brenda Blethyn, the Betty Spencer- like paramour to the Chance feller, was the Her Who Plays Villanelle of her time, the writer was always coming up with excuses to get her in skimpy dresses, or in her undies, or whatever.

Excellent news. Just had a quick look on YouTube and there's a fair bit of it on there so that's this afternoon sorted.

I did watch the 55s clip which has BB remove her clothes quite a lot and jiggle around. I feel #cancelled.

I used to watch Seans Show all the time when it was on. I used to love the jaunty theme tune which would start off really energetic and upbeat...then would become more minimal and sombre towards the end of the series.

I'm fairly certain a lot of it went over my head at the time. I recall one of the Troughtons was also in it. I do remember being very excited when the TARDIS was used as a plot point in series 2...oh and I remember loving his rendition of Psycho Killer, also in series 2.

Series 1 is out on DVD but they never put series 2 out...although it is up on YouTube I think.

Does anyone remember Norman Lovetts show I Lovett? I used to watch that all the time too.

I remember the title of According to Bex but I don't think I ever saw it, which was weird as I love Spaced so maybe I didn't clock she was in it. Just read the premise on Wikipedia and it sounds exactly like Bridget Jones, which is probably intentional.

Also remember Sean's Show, used to love it.

Him Who Played Villa Piers in " The New Statesman", son of Troughton , was the barman at Sean's local, innit ( wasn't his mate, though; they weren't that close) ?
Wasn't / Isn't " Sean's Show" actually quite well remembered? Sean was such a handsome lad at the time, scampering around in his Nick Cave t- shirt, had I been an Indie lass at the time I wouldn't 'Alf have fancied him.

Sadly, with the best will in the world, " Sean's Show" itself was actually quite patchy, bordering on the downright crap for the second series :(

But the funny thing is....

This is probably better remembered than I think but Home To Roost? Inspector Morse was in it as a dad always as loggerheads with his rather Jeremy-from-Peep-Show-ish son who lived with him.

Hee! I rewatched all of it last year on YouTube, and it actually still stands up, it's still actually quite funny, in a sitcommy way, due mainly to Tony's charming presence , it has to be said.Wanda Ventham was in an episode too, I recall.
I watched it upon original broadcast , too; very fond memories of my friend and former flatmate coming round to visit me on a Thursday eve, prior to pub -going,specifically to watch this programme. My flatmate would give me the role of Slatters , due to strong physical resemblance at the time, and he'd give himself the role of Tony's character's brother ( who was also his flatmate ), and we'd laugh along to the show in a " what are we both playing at now? " kind of way.
That all sounds a bit pathetic now I've typed it out, but they really were great days, ladies and gentlemen.

I might have a rewatch too if it's better than I remembered then. I was only 13/14 when it was on and I've never seen it since so a lot of it probably went over my head.

I loved that as a kid, it was the first sitcom I became vaguely obsessed by. But it's yet another show I don't want to rewatch, I've caught a few old comedies recently and too many of them don't stand up to 21st century viewing - for an article I watched the first episode of Last Of The Summer Wine for instance, and was amazed it had rape jokes and Compo reading a porno in it.

Sam's Game (2001) Davina McCall's short-lived sitcom with Ed Byrne. It was strange in the 00s when personalities like Davina, Johnny Vaughan, Denis Van Houten, Jamie Theakston, Charlotte Church, Sean from Coronation Street etc were given their own scripted comedy vehicles or light-hearted chat shows. Not saying you can't do both, Mel & Sue, f'rinstance and Theakston was great in Rock Profile. But does that happen now in TV? Did Robert Rinder's chat show ever happen?

Someone posted a clip from End Of Part One on here recently. I can remember liking it at the time (1980 apparently) but can't remember anything else about it.

if we're doing sitcoms, how about You Must Be The Husband starring Tim Brooke-Taylor and Diane Keen, who seemed to be on everything in those days. And from around the same period Me And My Girl starring Richard O'Sullivan and Joanne 'elder sister of wild child Emma' Ridley? Timbo was apparently in that too. Can't remember a thing about them except that they were on.

Earlier this year I caught a few moments of That’s My Boy, a sitcom starring Mollie Sugden that I have absolutely no memory of despite it apparently running for five series from 1981-1985. I watched very little so can’t really give an opinion but Ms Voltan sat through a few episodes and thought it was unadulterated shit.

First time I went to the States (late 80s?) that was being shown at primetime on one of the networks.

This'll probably be another that's well remembered here but less so in general - Nightingales. About 10 years ago I had a small gathering of about 10-15 mates over to my flat and one, spotting the DVD on my shelf, starting raving about the show and asked to borrow it, while no one else in the room had even heard of it.

Someone (SMBH?) pointed me in the direction of Dailymotion during a discussion of A Small Problem, which has episodes - have check and Snakes and Ladders is there.

Just going from my hazy memory, but it was one that I liked and was sorry that it didn't get a second series and it was definitely set up for one. John Gordon Sinclair was very good - I forgot that Adrian Edmonson was in it as well, I suspect because the former's character was very engaging, the latter's not so much. Will rewatch as it's one I have thought about some time, but it might have worked better if it focussed more on one character.

Did they ever actually go downhill in a bathtub in LOTSW or does everybody just remember the Reeves & Mortimer parody? I've never known this and can't be bothered to look it up.
