And let's not forget he didn't mind using the whole affair to cash in with 'Peter Shilton's Handball Maradona', available on Amstrad, C64 and Speccy: a weird title otherwise, as it had nothing to do with the Argentine.
Fuck. I had this. But I cannot remember anything about it at all.

bgmnts

Just watched that Film 4 documentary on him. I felt well sorry for him and came away thinking Italian football fans were/are genuinely a bit wrong in the head.

Meanwhile this undertaker's assistant has been sacked for taking a selfie next to Maradona's body.

Reportedly one Argentinian fan who saw the picture wrote: 'I want this fat baldie who took a picture of himself by Diego's body dead. I want him dead. DEAD.'

I hope you're all as depressed as I am by the disgusting use of 'baldie'.

The start of that doc, with the video footage of the frenetic convoy into Napoli's stadium, is fucking electrifying. From then on, the only time you don't see him penned in by mobs of people, friend or foe, is when he's on the pitch, either playing or training. Fuck know's what that would do to your psyche.

'Baldie' - playful, affectionate.
'Baldy' - hatespeech.

"During a meeting with Pope John Paul II at the Vatican in 1987, they clashed on the issue of wealth disparity, with Maradona stating, "I argued with him because I was in the Vatican and I saw all these golden ceilings and afterwards I heard the Pope say the Church was worried about the welfare of poor kids. Sell your ceiling then amigo, do something!" "

Popbitch version

"There are few things more nerve-wracking for a Catholic than to come face to face with the Pope – even if their day job is Internationally Revered Sporting Icon. Diego Maradona was so nervous when he paid a visit to the Vatican that he had to be escorted to a side room to have a cheeky nose-up before meeting John Paul II.

If you're wondering whether it was a smart idea for him to hoof a quick sharpener ahead of his introduction to JP2, this is how Maradona later described the encounter in his autobiography:

"So, yes, I fell out with the Pope. I went to the Vatican and I saw that the ceilings were made of gold. And I heard the Pope saying he would take care of the children, but if so, sell the ceiling, tiger! You've got nothing going for you. You were only a goalkeeper!" "
